University of Canterbury is a research based public university located in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is the second oldest university in New Zealand. The motto of the university is “Ergo tua rura manebunt” that means “Therfore may your fields prosper”. The official website of the university is www.canterbury.ac 

University of Canterbury, History

The University of Canterbury was founded in 1873 as Canterbury College. It was funded by Canterbury Provincial Council. It became the second institution in New Zealand after University of Otago.

Campuses

The University of Canterbury has three campuses that are –

  • Ilam – it is the main campus of the University of Canterbury located in Christchurch. It has three libraries with the Central Library. It is also home to cafes and restaurants as well as pharmacy, bookshop, the UC rec Centre and UC Health centre
  • Dovedale – it has Christchurch College of Education. It is located adjacent to Ilam Campus. It also has the old Henry Library, The Christchurch College of English and Sonada student residences.
  • City - The Christchurch City campus has Christchurch Arts Centre and the Mananwa building which is a part of the faculty of health. It also includes the Teece Museum of Classical Antiquities.

Libraries

The University of Canterbury has three libraries that are –

  • Central Library – The Central Library has collections of over 2 million physical items including books, archives, journals and a miscellany of other items that support research and teaching in Humanities, Social Sciences, Law, Commerce, Music and Fine Arts.
  • EPS Library – it supports research and teaching in Engineering, forestry and sciences.
  • Macmillian Brown Library – it is a research library, archive and art gallery that specializes in collecting items related to New Zealand and Pacific Islands history.

The university has ten student residences throughout campus. Five of them are fully-catered halls of housing exclusively for first year undergraduate students: Arcady College House, Rochester and Rutherford, Tupuanuku and University Hall and five others are student accommodation houses which are home to both undergraduate and postgraduate students: Sonda Christchurch campus, Hayashi, Kirkwood Avenue, Waimairi Village and Ilam Apartments.

The University of Canterbury Students Association operates out of the Student Union Building named Haera-roa which serves as the student activity centre. The university’s student population operates the main student magazine, Canta. The university has over 140 academic, sporting, recreational and cultural societies and clubs. The most prominent of these include the Student Volunteer Army, the University of Canterbury Engineering Society, the University of Canterbury Law Society etc.

1. UC International First Year Undergraduate Scholarships

The University of Canterbury offers the UC International First Year Scholarship to high-achieving international students beginning an undergraduate degree program at the University.

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines

Eligible candidates have to be full-fee-paying international students and should not be citizens of New Zealand or Australia, or holders of New Zealand residence class visas. They must complete, or have completed on or after 1 January of the year before the year of application, a University Entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a University of Canterbury undergraduate degree program. 

One should have applied for admission to the University by 15 August of the year prior to their intended first year of enrolment at the University.
