We equip our students with knowledge and critical thinking skills that will enable them to tackle difficult problems throughout their careers. The curriculum teaches not only foundational courses in physics, but also technology-driven courses such as computer modelling and advanced instrumentation. The Applied Physics major allows students to specialise in the disciplines of Biomedical Physics, Materials Technology, Nuclear and Environmental Physics and Photonics. Our graduates are well prepared for employment not only in commercial, government, education, medical and healthcare and industrial sectors, but also in engineering companies and nuclear facilities. The major prepares students for further studies in biomedical physics, materials engineering, photonics, nuclear science and technology.

Award of an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with a minimum diploma point score of 30 (out of 45) is required. Grade E or above in three GCE A-level (or A2) / International A-level subjects. TOEFL Minimum total score 550 on the paper-based test / 79 on the Internet-based test and IELTS Overall band score of 6.5 or above.

Applied Physics graduates enjoy a diverse range of challenging careers from medical physicists, environmental consultants, materials scientists, biomedical engineers and nuclear technologists, to professionals in photonic equipment and components, electronic components, semiconductors and computer peripherals. Graduates are also eligible to develop their careers in government departments such as the Hong Kong Observatory, the Environmental Protection Department, the Hospital Authority and the Trade and Industry Department.

This major is to provide Bachelor-level education to students with diverse backgrounds, to prepare them to pursue a career in areas such as environmental physics, optics, materials technology, and biomedical physics in the industrial, commercial, governmental or educational sectors. On completion of the major, graduates will be able to integrate knowledge learned in the major to support in at least an original discovery or creative design relevant to applied physics.

Apply knowledge of mathematics, physics, and engineering appropriate to the degree in Physics (with the focus on one or more of the areas in applied physics: environmental physics, optics, materials technology, and biomedical physics). This includes: (a) to design a component, a process or a system to meet desired needs within realistic constraints. (b) to identify, formulate, and solve physics and engineering problems, Design and conduct experiments, as well as analyze, interpret and present results, Use the techniques, skills, and modern Physics and engineering tools including computer/IT tools necessary for practices appropriate to the degree in Physics along with an understanding of their processes and limitations, Appreciate the impact of Physics and engineering applications in a global and societal context, especially the importance of health, safety and environmental considerations to both workers and the general public, Appreciate basic laws and principles of physics and to use this knowledge to explain everyday life examples and phenomena, to explain science to people not in the science and engineering discipline, and to educate the public in physics.
