Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.)

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

American University in Dubai

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) at the American University in Dubai is a five-year professional degree that prepares students for architectural practice by blending design creativity with technical, cultural, and environmental understanding. It suits students who want to become architects with strong digital design, structural awareness, and professional skills for work in architecture, planning, and the built environment.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
Students begin with foundation design and representation through Architectural Design Studio I & II and Architectural Graphics, developing core skills in spatial thinking, drawing, and model-making. Early study of History of Architecture I and communication skills introduces cultural context and the fundamentals of architectural language.

Year 2:
In the second year, students advance to Architectural Design Studio III & IV, where they tackle projects that respond to context, human behaviour, and building use. Courses such as Materials and Methods of Construction and continued History and Theory of Architecture support understanding of building assemblies, material properties, and design thinking grounded in tradition and innovation.

Year 3:
The third year includes Architectural Design Studio V & VI, Structural Analysis, and Environmental and Building Service Systems, where students integrate creative design with structural logic and building performance. They learn to analyse loads, structural behaviour, energy systems, and sustainability issues, enriching design solutions with engineering and environmental awareness.

Year 4:
Students study advanced architectural and technical subjects such as Architectural Design Studio VII & VIII, Structural Design, and design integration courses that incorporate building envelope systems, life safety, and accessibility. Emphasis is placed on complex design problems, digital tools, and coordination across multiple technical disciplines.

Year 5:
The final year culminates in a Capstone Architectural Design Project and professional preparation, typically including real-world problem solving, portfolio development, and a Professional Internship that embeds supervised practice experience. Students synthesise historical, technical, and practical knowledge in comprehensive design work that demonstrates readiness for architectural practice.

Focus areas:
