Politics BA

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how the world really works—why governments make the decisions they do, how social movements gain power, or what role ideas like freedom and justice play in shaping society—then Sheffield’s Politics BA is the right fit for you. This degree gives you the freedom to explore the political challenges that matter most today, while building strong analytical and research skills that employers truly value.

Curriculum Structure

First Year

In your very first year, you’ll get to grips with the essentials of political thinking and research. Modules like Political Analysis 1: An Introduction to Research and Scholarship show you how to investigate and interpret political issues, while Introduction to Western Political Thought helps you explore the big ideas behind democracy and power. With classes such as Political Economy of Global Capitalism and Africa in the World, you’ll broaden your perspective beyond Europe and the West, learning how politics works on a global scale.

Second Year

By your second year, you’ll start shaping your degree around the areas that inspire you most. Alongside developing stronger research and analytical skills, you can dive into topics like comparative politics, political institutions, or international relations. This is the point where you’ll see your interests come into focus, giving you the chance to specialise and explore political themes in greater depth.

Third Year

In your final year, you’ll put everything together. You’ll have the option to take on an independent dissertation—a project where you choose the subject and really make it your own—or join advanced seminars that push you to think critically about current political debates. By the end, you’ll leave Sheffield not just with knowledge, but with the confidence to use it in the real world.

Focus Areas

Political theory, global and regional politics, political economy, research skills, public policy, institutions, and governance.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates leave Sheffield ready to research, analyse, and explain political issues with real confidence. You’ll be able to argue your ideas clearly, back them up with evidence, and apply what you’ve learned to both academic and professional settings.
