Andrews University

Andrews University, located in Berrien Springs, Michigan, is a private Seventh-day Adventist university. Andrews University began as Battle Creek College in 1874, and it is the flagship university of the Seventh-day Adventist educational system, the world's second biggest Christian school system.

Andrews University History

Andrews University began as a modest Seventh-day Adventist school called Battle Creek College, named after the local city of Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1874. In 1901, the university relocated from Battle Creek, Michigan to Berrien Springs, Michigan. The university was renamed "Andrews University" in 1960 in honour of John Nevins Andrews.

Andrews University Campuses

Andrews University is located in the southwest Michigan village of Berrien Springs. The campus sits 12 miles (19 kilometers) from Lake Michigan's shoreline and near the St. Joseph River. The University of Notre Dame, which is located in South Bend, Indiana, is 25 miles (40 kilometers) away; as a result, some Andrews faculty members have combined appointments with Notre Dame. Arboretum status has been granted to the 1,600-acre (6.5-km2) campus. The campus has a variety of indigenous trees, particularly around the quad in the heart of the university. There are 27 educational buildings on site, as well as the Howard Performing Arts Center, an airpark, dorms, and apartment complexes.

James White Library is the major library at Andrews University. The original James White Memorial Library was built in 1937 as the university's campus, and then known as Emmanuel Missionary College first’s stand-alone library facility. In 1959, the denomination's graduate programs in theology and education relocated from Takoma Park, Maryland, to Berrien Springs, Michigan, in order to create a complete university to meet the world church's growing needs, and James White Library has been a prominent part of Andrews University since that time. The Music Materials Resource Center and the Architecture Resource Center are the two branches of the James White Library at the present. JWL now has approximately 750,000 titles and 2,800 subscriptions to periodicals. The library also has a large collection of non-print resources and has made its catalogue accessible over the Internet.

University Medical Specialties, located near to the Apple Valley Plaza, can help students with their medical requirements. To make an appointment, call 269-473-2222 during regular business hours (Monday–Thursday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m.–12 p.m.). As part of their resident hall package, students are entitled to limited health care through University Medical Specialties. University Medical Specialties is also available to non-residence hall students living in apartments or off-campus housing for a fee. If a medical emergency happens outside of regular office hours, students can reach a physician by dialing the University Medical Specialties answering service at 269-473-2222.

Andrews University sports and fitness

On campus, Andrews University students have access to a fitness centre. The Andreasen Center for Wellness has elliptical trainers, treadmills, stationary bikes, recumbent bikes, and stair climbers, among other cardiovascular machines. The centre also has a large selection of weight stack and free weight equipment. At the group exercise studio, group fitness courses are held most days at midday and early evening. There are also locker rooms with separate showers and lockers.

Andrews University's residence hall has two types of rooms: East (non-suite rooms) and West (suite rooms) (suite rooms). The residential rent package includes four kitchenettes and four laundry rooms with unlimited use. On the bottom level, there is a rehearsal area, and each story has various lounges. In the East Lobby, there is a special prayer space for personal devotions and Bible study, as well as a television for allowed use. A computer lab is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and a tutoring room is open for two hours each night, Sunday through Thursday. The residence halls severely enforce a curfew based on a student's age, as well as a visitation regulation that prohibits students from the opposing gender from visiting.

The major mission of Andrews University is to protect campus safety through proactive measures such as public education and facility security, as well as to respond to both criminal and non-criminal occurrences. The Berrien County Sheriff's Department Reserve Academy, Public Area Training Council, FEMA Emergency Management Institute, and Red Cross, among other certified training, is used to better educate their staff to handle this role. Compliance, Dispatch, and Patrol are the three divisions of the Office of Campus Safety. The Compliance Division is in charge of the University's fire and occupational safety compliance.
