Emory University History

Emory University is a private research university in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It is one of the oldest private institutions of higher education in Georgia, USA. It was founded in 1836 as Emory College. Emory College has nine academic divisions and Emory Healthcare is the largest healthcare system in the state of Georgia, it is the leading coordinator of the U.S Health Department.

Emory University was established in 1836 which was named after Methodist bishop John Emory. During the American civil war the university was closed and converted into the headquarters of the Union Army. In 1854, the Atlanta Medical College which is a pioneer  of Emory University School of Medicine was founded. It consistently ranked among top25 universities in the nation.

Emory University Campus

Emory University’s main campus was established in 1836 in Georgia. It is a 56-acre campus which is home to Oxford College of Emory University. The buildings were designed with Neo-classical architecture and Gothic Revival architecture. The campus was designated as part of the Oxford Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places of US in 1975.

Emory’s Atlanta campus was built by architect Henry Hornbostel which covers more than 600 acres. The campus is heavily forested. The Arbor Day Foundation named Emory a tree campus USA school in 2015. The campus has Emory University Hospital Museum which has the largest collection of ancient artifacts in the Southeastern US.

In 1991, Emory opened the first collegiate LGBT student center in the Southeastern United States which is tenth oldest in the nation. Dormitories of the campus include the undergraduate Residential Center, Clairmont Residential center, Town apartment.

Emory University Scholarships

1. Georgia Hope Scholarship

Georgia’s HOPE Programs are for those students who demonstrate academic achievement, not only in high school but throughout their time in college. Grants and scholarships are funding sources that are not required to be repaid.  These amounts can be determined based on demonstrated need or academic merit.

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines

All HOPE programs require students to meet basic requirements. An eligible student must:

Meet HOPE's U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen requirements;

Be a legal resident of Georgia;

Meet enrollment requirements;

Be in compliance with Selective Service registration requirements;

Meet academic achievement standards;

A student must be in good standing on all student loans or other financial aid programs;

A student must be in compliance with the Georgia Drug-Free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990;

A Student must not have exceeded the maximum award limits for any HOPE program.

Students who are not eligible for the HOPE Scholarship as an entering freshman can be eligible when they have justified a minimum of 30 credit hours with a 3.0 or better grade point average.

2. Georgia Zell Miller Scholarship

The Zell Miller Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship program with certain academic and grade point average eligibility requirements available to students who have attained the University System of Georgia and GSFC's residency requirements and are registered in an undergraduate degree-seeking program. To be a Zell Miller Scholar a student must also have met all the eligibility requirements of a HOPE Scholar.

Met the aforementioned requirements for the Zell Miller Scholarship at the time of high school graduation.

Have at least a 3.3 college GPA at the checkpoints (30, 60, 90 attempted hours and every spring semester).

Georgia residents who graduate from high school with a 3.7 or greater GPA and a score of at least a 1,200 reading and math score on the SAT or an ACT composite score of 26.
