University History

Illinois State University was founded in 1857 and it is a public research university. It is the oldest public university in Illinois. In the beginning Illinois State University was founded as a teacher training school. In 1965, the University name was changed to Illinois State University at Normal, and later again in 1968 it was changed to Illinois State University. The university motto is “Gladly we Learn and Teach” from the beginning. Illinois State University is situated in the town of Normal nearly 130 miles from southwest of Chicago. Illinois State University runs as a diverse community of scholars with a commitment to provide a small-college atmosphere with large-university opportunities and challenges.

University Infrastructure & Services

Campus

Illinois State University has seven residence halls for students. The campus is spread across 1,180 acres of land. The Illinois State University campus quadrangle is compact as compared to other large universities, with buildings located close to each other around a rectangular center lawn. The total campus enrollment as of fall 2021 was around 20, 233 students. University consists of a green environment, a big library, sports complex, quadrangle for events and more places which provide an amazing life to students on campus.  

Libraries

The Illinois State University Milner Library was built in 1976 and plays an important role in the University’s educational and research work. Milner Library has a collection of more than 1.5 million volumes and number of electronic materials accessible by the Internet to students and faculty. The Special Collections in the library include extensive Circus and Allied Arts materials and a children's literature collection that features more than 100 first edition volumes signed by author Lois Lenski. In 2007, the Milner library received the John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award, an award which is only given to seven libraries nationwide. The Milner Library was named after Angeline "Ange" Vernon Milner (1856–1928), a Bloomington-Normal native and the first full-time librarian at Illinois State Normal University. Library is focused to provide top-notch library resources, programs, and services to the students. They are dedicated towards welcoming the amazing environment for a diverse community of students and faculty. 

Housing services

On-campus- University Housing Services at Illinois State University provides residence halls. There are seven residence halls on-campus. Students can select the room of their choice based on costs, hall facilities, location, availability. Room design vary per hall and include multi-person units, singles, studios, suites and some apartment-style rooms with kitchens for convenient living. Through university’s affinity housing students can live in groups of like-minded students who share the same love for sports, literature, film and course. 

Off-campus- The Housing Services at Illinois State University assists students in finding off-campus housing and roommates. They provide convenient housing to students, faculty and staff nearby university. 

Medical services

 Illinois State University Student Health Services Clinic provides medical services to students. The staff consists of physicians and nurses who are dedicated towards their work and provide high quality medical care to students. Illinois State University offers 400+ registered students’ clubs and organization (RSO’s) which provide wide range of opportunities for students to engross themselves.
