Stony Brook University SUNY

Stony Brook Institution (SBU), sometimes known as the State University of New York at Stony Brook, is a public research university located in Stony Brook, Long Island, in the New York City metropolitan area. It is one of the two flagship universities of the State University of New York system, with the University at Buffalo. It is the state's largest public university (by area), with 213 buildings spread across 1,454 acres (5.9 km2) of property in Suffolk County.

History of Stony Brook University SUNY

The State University College on Long Island was founded 65 years ago in Oyster Bay and moved to Stony Brook in 1962. The State University of New York at Stony Brook began as the State University College on Long Island in Oyster Bay in 1957 (SUCOLI). The institution was founded over a decade after New York's public higher education system was established as a college for secondary school teacher preparation. SUCOLI began with a class size of 148 students. Ward Melville, a philanthropist, and businessman from western Suffolk County's Three Village area donated roughly 400 acres (160 ha) of land to the state for the creation of a public university.

The main campus of Stony Brook University is located in Stony Brook, with satellite campuses in Southampton and South Korea. Stony Brook University's main campus, which spans 1,454 acres in Stony Brook, New York, consists of 213 buildings. In terms of land size, it is the largest public university in the state of New York. After beginning in Oyster Bay, New York, the campus was relocated to Stony Brook in 1962. The university's West and East campuses are separated by County Route 97 (Nicolls Road), which runs through the centre of the campus. Many of the university's academic buildings, student dormitories, and sporting facilities are located on the West Campus, which is centered on the Academic Mall. The Stony Brook University Center sits at the heart of the East Campus.

Sports and fitness facilities in Stony Brook University

The Stony Brook Seawolves are Stony Brook University's athletic teams, based in Stony Brook, New York. Except for football, which they compete as an associate member of the Colonial Athletic Association, and women's tennis, which competes as an associate member of the Missouri Valley Conference, the school competes at the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and is a member of the America East Conference.
