 History of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry

SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) was established on July 28, 1911, by then New York Governor John Alden Dix. Originally a division of Syracuse University, the College became an independent legal entity in 1913. For the very first time, in 1912 research was commenced at the college. The college gained recognition as a specialized college within the State University of New York (SUNY) system in 1948, and its name was changed to State University College of Forestry at Syracuse University.

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) awarded the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) a STARS Platinum grade for its sustainability achievements (AASHE).  ESF is one of just ten institutions in the country to earn Platinum status.

Students in the forest and natural resources management program can receive an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in forest technology, surveying, or environmental and natural resource conservation by spending an academic year (48 credits) or summer at the Ranger School in Wanakena, New York.

Moon Library, which was founded in 1968, is the primary library of SUNY College of ESF. The library is home one of the best collections of environmental and natural resources literature and instructional materials in the country. Housing services

  Housing services are provided at SUNY College of ESF. Apart from the main campus, the Wanakena campuses also have residential facilities. First year students are required to live on campus. Centennial Hall is given to the first year students to live in. Most transfer students prefer to live off campus. Students attending Ranger School are also required to live in the residential premises provided by Ranger School.

Crouse Medical Practice (CMP) has formed a partnership with ESF to provide medical services, health care and pharmaceutical services to ESF students who choose to use its services. Walk-in appointments are available, but appointments in advance are recommended.

The SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) is the nation's leading college for natural resource and environmental science, design, engineering, and management. Students attend classes on the Syracuse campus. On the eastern side of the Finger Lakes, Syracuse is located in Onondaga County, the geographic centre of New York State. New York City, Toronto, and the Adirondack Mountains' High Peaks Region are all within a five-hour journey.

ESF is a multi-campus university with about 1 million square feet of facilities in 186 buildings spread across 25,000 acres of land. The main campus in Syracuse, as well as five regional campuses and three field stations, provide educational and research facilities.

Nearby Airport

I-90 (New York State Thruway) and I-81 provide access to the city. The majority of international students arrive via Hancock International Airport in Syracuse, New York, via connecting flights from New York City (east) or Chicago (west).

ESF, known as the Mighty Oaks on the field, is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), with six teams competing in four sports-

Soccer- women's and men's team

ESF students compete on club sports teams at both ESF and Syracuse University, including ESF's competitive bass fishing team and SU's quidditch team, in addition to the intercollegiate USCAA and woodsman teams. The Ranger School Hockey Club is made up of students from the Ranger School.

Centennial Hall's residential life is located just steps from campus's core and provides living options for all types of students. There is a place for everyone, from first-year student alternatives to returning student suites and apartments. With study and social areas, ESF students have a place to learn and succeed academically, as well as a place to unwind and connect with their friends.

Food & drink

 ESF students have access to a range of dining options on campus, including vegetarian, international, kosher, menu items. Many restaurants and cafeteria staff go to great lengths to deliver consistently excellent cuisine and service, which is always evolving to meet the needs, tastes, and preferences of ESF students. Dining halls and The Trailhead Café are the main attractions.

Short term getaways around The ESF

There are various options for short time gateways around the ESF. The Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park is one of more than 50 state, county, and city parks and many nature centers within a short drive of campus. Boating, swimming, downhill and cross-country skiing, indoor and outdoor ice skating, and large trail systems are all available in the area, which also boasts 40 golf courses. Lake Ontario and the Finger Lakes of New York are less than an hour away, while the Adirondack Park, the biggest wilderness region east of the Mississippi, is only three hours away. 

Part time jobs

Part time jobs are available at ESF. International students who meet the requirements for non-federal on-campus employment at SUNY-ESF may apply. During the academic semester, on-campus work is limited to 20 hours per week and must be incident to status. During the College's winter, spring, and summer holidays, when classes are not in session, employment may be raised to full-time (40+ hours) each week (individual vacation days such as Martin Luther King Day and Thanksgiving break do not qualify). Unless a student has been permitted for post-completion OPT or Academic Training by the Office of International Education, the 20-hour limit applies to all international students (including RAs, TAs, and GAs). J-1 students must apply for on-campus employment authorization in advance with the Office of International Education.

Students' safety is the main priority for the ESF. Niche gathered and analyzed information from crime reports before ranking over 1,000 public schools. SUNY-ESF was ranked as the fourth safest school in Central New York and the 19th safest institution in the state. The University Police Department is doing a great job regarding students' safety and campus safety. ESF University Police Department is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
