The Texas legislature enacted a measure in 1917 that established a branch of Texas A&M University in Abilene. After it was discovered that Governor James E. Ferguson had erroneously stated the site committee's choice of location, the bill was revoked two years later during the following session. On November 1, 1924, work on the college campus began. The cornerstone of the Administration Building was set in front of 20,000 people ten days later. Texas Technological College began classes on October 1, 1925, with a student body of 914 men and women. Agriculture, Engineering, Home Economics, and Liberal Arts were the first four schools.
