Tufts University

Tufts University is a research based private university situated in Massachusetts. It was established in 1852 as Tufts College, a large research university denoting the highest level of research activity. In 2021, it became a member of the Association of American Universities (a group of 64 leading research universities in North America). 

Tufts University, History

Tufts University was established in 1852, it was named after Charles Tuft, who donated 20 acres of land to the church in 1852 to open a university. Commonwealth of Massachusetts chartered Tufts College noting the college should promote ‘virtue and piety and learning in such of the languages and liberal and useful arts as shall be recommended’. Tufts College is the third oldest college in the Boston area.

Tufts University, Campus

The main campus of Tufts University is located on Walnut Hill in Medford and Somerville, which is about 8km to Boston. The majority of the campus is in Medford; the Somerville line intersects it, placing the lower campus in Somerville and leading to the common terms ‘Uphill’ and ‘Downhill’. The Uphill part of the campus comprises the academic and the residential quad. The academic quad has the earliest buildings and was built in the 19th century. The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine is located in Grafton which is west of the Boston campus. It also has an Ambulatory Farm Clinic and the Tufts Laboratory at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole.

Tufts University, Library

Tufts' first library building, Eaton Memorial Library, was formed in 1908, and was made possible by Andrew Carnegie. The building was extended in 1950 with the construction of the War Memorial Library in memory of Tufts Alumni who served in World War II. In 1965 the collection outgrew the building and was moved to a new library named Wessell Library.

The Zamboni is a monthly humor and satire magazine. Tufts college newspaper is ranked as one of the best in the country by the Princeton Review. 

SPORTS AND FITNESS

Tufts University provides their students a variety of sporting options like basketball, tennis, football, volleyball, swimming and diving. The men’s swim and dive team of the university placed 7th at the national championship. The men’s soccer team won the national championship in 2014 and 2016. The men’s and women’s squash teams are ranked among the top 30 teams in the nation, historically.

ACCOMMODATION 

70 percent of the undergraduate students of Tufts University live on-campus. Students can choose from small special interest houses, to traditional dorms, to shared apartments. There are 25 residential halls in the university. Each house organizes many activities and events that are not limited to the residents. Shared apartments are the most preferable housing option for most of the students.

The university has two dining areas, Dewick-MacPhie serving downhill students and Carmichael serving uphill students.

1. Tufts University Beinecke Scholarship

The Beinecke Scholarship Program provides substantial scholarships for the graduate education of young men and women of exceptional promise. The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study in the arts, humanities and social sciences. 

Each year approximately 135 colleges and universities are invited to nominate a student for a Beinecke Scholarship, and up to 20 new scholarships will be awarded. Each school invited to participate in the Beinecke Scholarship Program is permitted to make a single nomination each year.

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines

Applicants must be a junior and plan to enter a master's or doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences, and a documented history of financial need.

Have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise during his or her undergraduate career.

Be a United States citizen or the United States national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during his or her undergraduate years. Primary evidence of meeting this criterion is a student’s history of receiving need-based institutional, state or federal grants-in-aid.

Each nominated student will be required to complete a Financial Aid Data Sheet certifying that the student meets this criterion.

2. Tufts University Boren Fellowship

Boren Scholarships provide US undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to US interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Scholars represent a variety of academic backgrounds, but all are interested in studying less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili.

Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to US national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to US national security, broadly defined. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development and environmental degradation.

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines

Applicants must be current students in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.

Undergraduate students in STEM fields are eligible for summer-only programs.

They must be applying to a study abroad program that meets home institution standards in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand. Additionally, they must be willing to commit to a service requirement of work for at least a year in a position in the Federal Government with national security responsibilities (the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, or any element of the intelligence community are priority agencies).
