University History

University at Buffalo SUNY was founded in 1846. The university is a public research institute with campuses at Buffalo and Amherst, New York, United States of America. At first the university was a private medical college but in 1962 it was merged with the State University of New York system. It is a flagship institution of the State University of New York system. The university didn’t have its own facilities in the beginning and early lectures used to be held at an old post office on Seneca and Washington in Buffalo city. After this the expansion continued and many schools and colleges were open at the university. Since 1989, University at Buffalo SUNY is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), an organization which includes 65 leading research universities in the United States of America and Canada.

University Infrastructure & Services

Campuses

North Campus-

North Campus of University at Buffalo SUNY is located just outside the city of Amherst, New York. It is the place where most of the core academic programs are proposed and that is why it is also known as the academic heart of the university. North Campus was opened in the early 1970s. It is the largest of all three campuses at University at Buffalo, enclosing high-quality academic and research space, student residence halls and dining facilities. Plenty of green spaces which also includes a recreational lake and a 65-acre living woods which truly complement the built surroundings.

South Campus-

South Campus at University at Buffalo SUNY has been a Western New York landmark since the 1920s. It is situated in a leafy residential neighborhood in the North Buffalo zone, the 153-acre of land is home to classic ivy-covered buildings and grassy, tree-filled area with high-rise residence halls and apartments and unique research and innovative teaching facilities. The schools of Architecture and Planning, Dental Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health and Health Professions are all located in south campus.

 Downtown Campus-

Downtown Campus at University at Buffalo SUNY is known as the “Rising Biomedical Hub”. Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is the pillar of this campus which moved in 2017 due to construction of a State of Art building at Main and High streets lanes. Downtown Campus other entities includes the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, the Clinical and Research Institute on Addictions, and the Clinical and Translational Research Centre which are located near the Jacobs School in Buffalo’s medical corridor, a rapidly growing hub of research, education and clinical care.

Housing services

Campus Living is one of the many student-focused offerings of University at Buffalo. It is an important part of Student Life. University’s campus living department puts students first in every service, resources and programs. Campus Living has its own human resources, budget, IT, custodial and building services staff which is University’s verified and safe. There are nearly 7,500 students living on campus. The facilities include two residence halls on South Campus, and 11 residence halls and five apartment complexes on North Campus region for hassle free and easy living. Campus Living is a promise to the students. A commitment to students and staff that the university will provide the best housing. University’s on-campus housing Demonstrates honesty, reliability, trust, worthiness, ethical behavior, safety and a wonderful experience.

Medical services

Medical services at University at Buffalo are on priority list whether students are feeling sick or they want to stay healthy or just a routine checkup medical services are there to help and to take good care of them. If a student needs a doctor or nurse, professionals on-campus medical health care providers are there to help or manage medical care services. If a student falls sick or gets injured at night, on the weekend or when the health center is closed, services will be provided to students in need irrespective of time. Students can get prescribed medicines over-the-counter (OTC) medications at the University at Buffalo Student Health Pharmacy, and at pharmacies nearby the campus.  A student can view their immunization records through Patient Link on the university portal at University at Buffalo.

There are many short-term getaways near the university to have fun like; Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House, Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park, Canalside, Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, KeyBank Center, Pierce-Arrow Museum, Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site, Sahlen Field and there are many other options also available to spend holidays and weekends.
