University History

In 1869, University of Alabama Birmingham was founded. It is a public research university in Birmingham, Alabama USA. In the 1970s, the university began to expand with rapid growth. Enrolment at the beginning of the decade was around 6,629, out of which 2,724 were women. University of Alabama Birmingham bought land in the Southside for accommodating growing student population. The university formed an intercollegiate athletic program, joined the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In 1984, the university's name was changed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

In 1992, U.S. News and World Report named University of Alabama at Birmingham as the #1 up-and-coming university in the United States of America. In 1993, the university's economic impact on the Birmingham region was estimated at more than $1.5 billion per. The university became the first Alabama university to achieve "Research University I" status in the Carnegie Foundation classification in 1994.

Campus

University of Alabama at Birmingham is the main campus which provides training to the next generation of physicians and physician-scientists, answers basic scientific questions that lead to medical innovations, and brings the highest quality health care to all of the patients.
