University of Alabama History
The newly founded Alabama Territory was given permission by the US Congress in 1818 to set aside a township for the creation of a "seminary of learning." A second township was added to the land grant when Alabama was admitted to the Union on December 14, 1819, increasing the total to 46,000 acres (186 km2). On December 18, 1820, the Alabama General Assembly established the school, naming it "The University of the State of Alabama," and establishing a board of trustees to oversee its construction and management. The board chose a construction site and a designer for the campus. Beginning in 1892, the University of Alabama admitted female students.
