The University of California, Los Angeles is a research based public land-grant university in Los Angeles, California. The University is organized into the College of Letters and Science and 12 professional schools.  The University is frequently ranked among the best universities in the world and it is considered as one of the Public Ivies. University of California, History

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) was established in 1882 as a teachers college then known as the southern branch of the California State Normal School. This school was merged with the official founding of UCLA as the southern branch of the University of California in 1919 which makes it the second oldest of the 10-campus University of California system.

University of California, Campus

The campus of the University of California has four buildings: Royce Hall and Haines Hall on the north and Powell Library and Kinsey Hall on the south which was built in 1929. The Janss Steps are the entrance of the university. Now the university has 163 buildings across 419 acres in the western part of Los Angeles. The campus is in the residential area of Westwood and lies between Bel-Air to the north, Beverly Hills to the east and Brentwood to the west. The University has two campuses, north and south. The north campus is home to arts, humanities, social sciences, law, history and business programs. The south campus is home to the life sciences, engineering, mathematical sciences, health related fields and physical sciences. The campus of the university includes sculptural gardens, fountains, museums and a mix of architectural styles.

The library of the University of California has over 9 million books and 70,000 serials which are spread over 12 libraries and 11 archives, reading rooms and research centers. It is the 12th largest library in no of volumes in the United States of America. The very first library of the university was founded in 1884 called University Library but now it is called Powell Library on the name of one of its librarians.

STUDENT MEDIA 

The University of California student media is the home of newspapers, magazines and radio stations. The newspaper called Daily Bruin is the University’s most prominent student publication which was founded in 1919; it is the third most circulated newspaper in Los Angeles. In 2016 it won the National Pacemaker award for best college newspaper. The student media also publishes special-interest news magazines like Al-Talib, Fem, Ha’Am, La Gente, Nommo, Pacific Ties and OutWrite. 

ACCOMODATION

The University of California provides housing to around 10,000 undergraduate and 3000 graduate students. Most of the students are housed in 14 complexes on the western side of the campus that is called “The Hill”. The students can also live off-campus in halls, plazas, suites or apartments. The dining facility of the University is ranked among the best in the United States. The University currently offers 3 year guaranteed housing to incoming freshmen and 1 year to incoming transfer students. The University has 4 types of housing available for students that are residential halls, deluxe residential halls, residential plazas and residential suites.
