 History of CU Boulder

The Colorado territory assembly amended the state constitution on March 14, 1876, to provide funding for the University Of Colorado In Boulder. Boulder and Caon City battled for the right to host the University of Colorado. On September 20, 1875, the cornerstone of the structure that would become Old Main was laid. The institution first opened its doors on September 5, 1877. Because there were few high schools in the state that could sufficiently prepare students for university study at the time, a preparatory school was established on campus in addition to the university. The student body consisted of 15 students in the college proper and 50 students in the preparatory school in the fall of 1877.
