University History

In 1850, University of Dayton a private, Catholic research university in Dayton, Ohio was founded. The university was founded by the Society of Mary (Marianists). It is one of three Marianist universities in the United States of America and the second-largest private university in Ohio state. The university's campus is located on both sides of the Miami River and it is spread across 388 acres of land. On July 1, 1850, the University of Dayton had its beginnings, when St. Mary's School for Boys had enrollment of14 primary students from Dayton city. In 1882, The University of Dayton was empowered to provide degrees by the State of Ohio. In 2005, Marianist Educational Associates were established to educate lay leaders so the beliefs and traditions at the foundation of the Marianist educational philosophy could continue to sustain the Marianist identity and values at the university. University made a record of enrolling more than 1,500 international students in 2012.

University Infrastructure & Services

Campus

The earlier campus of University of Dayton was compact; anyone could cross it in less than 10 minutes. In 1884, St. Joseph Hall, a residence hall, was built. It is home to the classrooms and offices for the social sciences department and the university's Fitz Centre. In 1904, Chaminade Hall was named for Blessed William Joseph Chaminade who was the founder of the Society of Mary. Kettering Labs is home to the School of Engineering. It incorporates classrooms, labs, offices, a machine shop, a wind tunnel, and the Innovation Center. In 1993, The Jesse Philips Humanities Center was built and named for former university trustee Jesse Philips. It is home to the academic departments including American studies, English, history, languages and philosophy. It includes 20 classrooms, two computer centers, a recital hall and an international language lab.

Miriam Hall is home to the School of Business Administration and includes team-teaching, hands-on labs and seminar classrooms, including the Davis Center for Portfolio Management, the Crotty Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and the Hanley Trading Center. Miriam Hall is named for Dayton philanthropist Miriam Rosenthal, who played a major role in fundraising. In 2011, Stuart Field was updated to include intramural and club sports. In 2005, the University of Dayton purchased land and buildings near to the western border of the historic campus which increased campus size by 25%. The main building, Daniel J. Curran Place is home to the University of Dayton Research Institute, Center for Leadership, classrooms used by Masters of Business Administration, School of Education, and Health Sciences programs, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and the Alumni Center. The University of Dayton’s Sports Complex is situated on the west bank of the Great Miami River. The sports complex comprises of seating area of 13,409, field area for baseball and softball, and a Welcome Stadium.

Libraries

The University of Dayton Libraries play an important role in the University’s educational and research work. The libraries consist of the Roesch Library, the Marian Library, and University Archives and Special Collections, Catholic and Marian collections and research and many other collections are available. University’s libraries are focused to provide top-notch library resources, programs, and services to the students. They are dedicated towards welcoming an amazing environment for a diverse community of students and faculty. The University of Dayton’s libraries provide flexible and well-equipped surroundings for everyone's research and learning needs. They support the student learning experience, creation and administration of knowledge, and also contribute to advancements in teaching and research programs.

Housing services

On-campus- University Housing of Dayton provides residence halls and apartments to live together on campus. Students can select a room of their choice based on costs, hall facilities, location, and availability. Room design vary per hall and include multi-person units, singles, studios, suites and some apartment-style rooms with kitchens for convenient living. Through university’s affinity housing students can live in groups of like-minded students who share the same love for sports, literature, film and course. 

Off-campus- The University of Dayton housing community assists students in finding off-campus housing and roommates in the neighborhood. They provide convenient housing to students, faculty and staff near the university. 

Medical services

 The University of Dayton Student Health Center provides medical services to students. The center is situated in Gosiger Hall.The staff consists of physicians and nurses who are dedicated towards their work and provide high quality medical care to students. The medical services include preventive services, evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic medical illnesses, pharmacy, dentistry, diagnostics and health education to make life easier at the University of Dayton. Students should make an appointment before visiting the center, in case of emergency they can directly walk-in. The Student Health Center's hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.
