University of Louisville (UofL)

The University of Louisville is a part of Kentucky state university system. The University of Louisville is a public research university which is located in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Students come from 118 of Kentucky's 120 counties, all 50 states in the United States, and 116 nations across the world.

University of Louisville History

The Kentucky General Assembly granted the University of Louisville a charter in 1798 to create an institution of higher learning in the newly founded town of Louisville. On the advice of renowned physician and medical author Charles Caldwell, the Louisville City Council created the Louisville Medical Institute in 1837. The University of Louisville was founded in 1846 when the Kentucky legislature merged the Louisville Medical Institute, the Louisville Collegiate Institution, and a newly established law school on a campus immediately east of Downtown Louisville. In the twentieth century, the university expanded rapidly, establishing new schools of liberal arts (1907), graduate studies (1915), dentistry (1918), engineering (1925), music (1932), and social work (1936).

After years of heated debate, the university finally joined the state system in 1970, thanks partly to then-Governor of Kentucky and UofL graduate Louie Nunn.
