University of Maine History
The University of Maine is a public land-grant research university which is located in Orono, Maine, USA. It is the Flagship University of the University of Maine System, having been founded in 1865 as Maine's land-grant college. The history of the University of Maine was started with The Morrill Act, approved by President Abraham Lincoln, which resulted in the establishment of the University of Maine in 1862. It first opened its doors on September 21, 1868, and changed its name to the University of Maine in 1897.

The University of Maine is the only land grant university on an island in the United States (other than the University of Hawai'i). It is located on Marsh Island, between the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers. The 660-acre (2.7 km2) campus, which is located in the small city of Orono with a population of 9,500 people, has an enrollment of 10,901 students (2012–2013). There are 37 academic buildings, 30 administrative buildings, 18 residence halls, 18 specific laboratory facilities, 14 Greek life houses, ten sports facilities, five museums, three dining facilities, two convenience stores, a student union, a cafe, a pub, an 87,000-square-foot (8,100 m2) state-of-the-art recreation and fitness centre, and a 200'x200' air-supported athletic/recreational dome on the campus.

The Raymond H. Fogler Library is the primary academic library of the University of Maine. The library's foundation was built in 1941, but due to World War II, it was not completed until 1947. The library's collections have to include More than 1 million volumes, nearly 4 million periodical subscriptions, 1.6 million microforms, and 2.2 million United States Federal, Maine State, and Canadian federal and provincial government publications.

The University of Maine has a fitness centre on campus for students. The New Balance Student Recreation Center has elliptical trainers, treadmills, stationary bikes, recumbent bikes, and stair climbers, among other cardiovascular machines. The centre also has a large selection of weight stack and free weight equipment. At the group exercise studio, group fitness courses are held most days at midday and early evening. There are also locker rooms with separate showers and lockers. The gym is also housed in the centre.
