University History
The University of Maryland is a public institution which was founded in 1856, when the General Assembly started a state agricultural school. The Maryland Agricultural College was settled on ancestral land of the Piscataway tribe, which was bought from a slaveholding farmer and agricultural education advocate, which three years later opened with only thirty-four students. University of Maryland is the flagship institute of the University System of Maryland.
By the time it started with its new courses in engineering, science and the liberal arts. Now, the university is a national powerhouse to research scholars, academics, in the arts and athletics area and is committed to enhancing diversity in its campus with a total community of 50,000 students and facing the grand challenges of the new era.

Campus
The Maryland university's campus -College Park is known for its red-brick Georgian buildings and a large lawn present at its center which is named as McKeldin Mall and nicknamed as "The Mall", which is one of the largest academic malls in the United States of America. The university's 1,250 acres of land is covered with 7,500 documented trees and garden plantings. In 2008 which led the American Public Gardens Association to choose the campus the University of Maryland Arboretum & Botanical Garden. The selection allowed the university to showcase its species and gardens which also includes native plantings. There are also nearly about 400 acres of urban forest on the campus and the Arbor Day Foundation has named the university in its 'Tree Campus USA' list.
