 The University of Massachusetts (UMass) is a research based public university founded 1863 as an agricultural college located in Amherst, Massachusetts, United States. It is the sole public land-grant university in the commonwealth of Massachusetts. The motto of the university is “Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem” which means “By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty. The University of Massachusetts is the largest university in Massachusetts by campus size and second largest university by enrollment.

 University of Massachusetts, History

The University of Massachusetts was established in 1863 by the provisions of the Federal Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act as Massachusetts Agricultural College to provide instruction to citizens in agricultural, mechanical and military arts. In 1931, due to its higher enrollment and broader curriculum it was renamed as Massachusetts State College and in 1947 it got the university status.

University of Massachusetts, Campus

The main campus of The University of Massachusetts is located in Amherst. The campus extends approx 1 mile from the campus center in all directions as a series of concentric rings. The innermost ring has academic buildings and research labs which is surrounded by a ring of seven residential areas and two university owned apartment complexes. These are in turn surrounded by a ring of athletic facilities, administration buildings and parking lots. The campus has its own power generation facility. The campus has the Hampshire Dining, an Integrated Science Building, a Nursing Building, a Studio Arts Building and a Recreation Center. The campus includes the new campus Police station, the George N. Parks Minuteman Marching Band Building, the Life Sciences Laboratories and the Integrated Learning Centre. 

University of Massachusetts, Library

The main library of the University of Massachusetts is known as W.E.B Du Bois Library which is the tallest academic research library in the world, standing at 26 stories above ground. Before its establishment, Goodell Hall was the university library which was named after Henry H. Goodell. The library is well known for its innovative architectural design. The library has many special collections that include works on movements for social change, African American history and culture, labor and industry, literature and arts and agriculture.

Another library of the campus is the Science and Engineering Library which is located in the Lederle Graduate Research Center Lowrise. The university also has the DEFA Film Library which has a collection of East German films outside of Europe.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION 

The Student Government Association is the undergraduate student governmental body which provides funding for many student organizations and agencies. It also makes recommendations on matters of campus policy. It advocates on behalf of students to the administration. The budget of the student government association is collected from the students as student activities fee. 

STUDENT MEDIA

The official newspaper of the University of Massachusetts is The Massachusetts Daily Collegian. It is a non-profit student run organization which does not receive funding from the university or from students. The newspaper operates on advertising revenue. The university’s student-run television station is known as UVC-TV 19. The FM of the university is WMUA 91.1 FM. 

SPORTS AND FITNESS

The University of Massachusetts is a member of Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The university is also a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. The University of Massachusetts Amherst Department of Athletics Sponsors Men’s Soccer, softball, Lacrosse, Swimming, Cross Country, Ice Hockey and they also Sponsor Women’s Inter-collegiate softball, Basketball, Cross Country, Rowing, Swimming, Tennis etc.

1. Albert Pierpont Madeira Scholarship Endowment Fund

The Albert Pierpont Madeira Scholarship Endowment Fund is awarded to full time sophomores, juniors, and seniors students who have been recommended by the faculty at University of Massachusetts Amherst. 

Eligibility Criteria/ Scholarship Guidelines:
To be eligible, an applicant:

- Should be full time sophomores, juniors, and seniors students who have been recommended by the faculty at the university.
- Should demonstrate good academic standing and services to the university and to their fellow students

2. Andrea Kane Scholarship
