UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI HISTORY

The University of Miami was established in the year 1925 by a group of people who realised that there is a need for higher learning for the development of their youngsters and growing community. The people who were supporting the institution believed that the community offered distinctive opportunities to develop inter- American studies, further creative work in the arts and letters and perform teaching and research programs in tropical studies.

By the year 1926, when the first class of 646 full time students enrolled at The University of Miami, the land had collapsed by a major hurricane and there were no hopes for a speedy recovery.  The university survived just because of its first president, Dr. Bowman F. Ashe (1926-52). Under his administration the institution got control of bankruptcy, a world war, and then in the post-war years, experienced enormous growth and expansion.

When the university was opened in 1926, it comprised the College of Liberal Arts, the School of Music, and the Evening Division. During the presidency Dr. Bowman F. Ashe, the university added many schools, the School of Law (1928), the School of Business Administration (1929), the School of Education (1929), the Graduate School (1941), the Marine Laboratory (1942: now the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science) and the School of Engineering (1947).

Dr. Jay F.W. Pearson accepted the presidency in 1953. During his presidency total enrolments were 10,000 which nearly increased to 14,000 by the end of the year 1962. Dr. Henry King Stanford (1962-81). He laid importance on research activities and addition of physical facilities. Various research centers and institutes were established in this time period, which includes the Center for Advanced International Studies (1964), the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Evolution (1964), the Center for Theoretical Studies (1965), and Institute for the Study of Aging (1975).

In 1981, Edward T. Foote II became the fourth president. Under his presidency the university was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest and most renowned honour society; three new schools were started – Architecture, Communication and School of International studies. Average SAT scores for fresh enrolments increased by 100 points.
