University of Michigan

The University of Michigan is a research-based public university situated in Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States. It was founded in 1817 by an act of the Michigan Territory. The University of Michigan is the oldest university of Michigan. The university has been governed by an elected board of regents since 1850.

University of Michigan, History

The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as the Catholepistemiad (centralized system of schools, libraries and other cultural institutions), under the act of the Territory of Michigan. In 1837 it was granted university status and powers related to the university were given to the Board of Regents.

University of Michigan, Campus

The main campus of the University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor which is divided into four areas; the North, Central, Medical and South campuses. The campus has more than 500 buildings with an area of 37.48 million square feet. The Huron River separates the Central and South campus to North campus. The University has a large office building called Wolverine Tower in southern Ann Arbor. The university has a U-M Golf course on South campus and Matthaei Botanical Garden on the eastern outskirts of Ann Arbor. All the campuses are connected by the bus service and there is a shuttle service connecting the University Hospital.

CENTRAL CAMPUS

The Central campus has the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and many other colleges. It has Harlan Hatcher Library and Shapiro Undergraduate Library. It also has a museum which has collections of archeology, anthropology, paleontology, zoology and dentistry. 

NORTH CAMPUS

The university bought this campus in 1952. It has Modernist Architecture. The North campus has the College of Engineering, the School of Music, Theater and Dance and many more. The campus has the Architecture and Engineering Library.

SOUTH CAMPUS

It is the site for the athletics program including major sports facilities such as Michigan Stadium, Crisler Center and Yost Ice Arena. It is also home to Buhr Library and Revelli Hall.

University of Michigan, Student life

ACCOMMODATION

The University of Michigan can accommodate approx 10,000 students which is nearly 25% of the total population of the students. The residence halls are located in Central campus, Hill Area. Family housing is available in North Campus and mainly serves the graduate students. A majority of the upper-division and graduate students live in off- campus apartments, houses and cooperatives. The University provides ‘living-learning communities’ where activities and residential life are combined. The University also has a number of ‘theme communities’ where students have the opportunities to be surrounded by students who have similar interests.

STUDENT MEDIA

The University of Michigan publishes many academic journals like The Law School publishes Michigan Law Review and six other journals, The Ross School of Business publishes Michigan Journal of Business and some other undergraduate journals are Michigan Journal of Political Science, Michigan Journal of History, University of Michigan Undergraduate Research and Michigan Journal of International Affairs.

SPORTS AND FITNESS

The sports teams of the University of Michigan are called Wolverines. The football team participates in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and Big Ten Conference in all sports. The University of Michigan boasts 27 varsity sports in which 13 men’s teams and 14 women’s teams. More than 250 athletes of Michigan University participated in the 2021 Olympics and won 155 medals. The Michigan stadium is the largest football stadium of any college in the United States.
