The University of Notre Dame, simply known as Notre Dame or ND is a private Catholic research university in Notre Dame, Indiana, USA. Notre Dame University organized into 7 school and colleges. It is recognized as one of the top Universities in the United States of America. Its motto is “Vita Dulcedo Spes” which means Life, Sweetness, Hope. 

UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME, HISTORY

The University of Notre Dame was established in 1842 by the bishop of Vincennes, Celestin Guynemer de la Hailandiere. Notre Dame started as a primary and secondary school. In 1844 it received its official college charter under the name of University of Notre Dame. Originally it was a all-male, the Sisters of the Holy Cross founded the female-only Saint Mary’s College near Notre Dame. 

 UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME, CAMPUS 

Notre Dame’s campus is located in Notre Dame, in the Michiana area of Northern Indiana. The main building was formed in 1843 that lies in 1,250 acres of land. It is admired as the most beautiful campus in the United States and around the world and it is also called the Golden Dame. Notre Dame’s campus is a major tourist destination in Northern Indiana.

ADMINISTRATIVE AND ACADEMIC BUILDINGS

The main building serves as the center of the university’s administrative offices. Its golden dome is topped by a statue of St. Mary which is a landmark to the university. The main building is located on Main Quad which is the oldest and most historic central part of campus. There are some religious buildings like the current Basilica of the Sacred Heart which is the site of Sorin’s original church.

 RESIDENTIAL AND STUDENT BUILDINGS    

There are 31 undergraduate residence halls. Most of the students of the university live in one of four graduate house complexes on campus. A new residence hall named Dunne Hall was opened in 2016. Flaherty Hall is built specially for women. The South Dining Hall and North Dining Hall serve the student body.

GLOBAL GATEWAYS

 The university has many centers around the world used for international studies and research, conferences abroad and alumni support. The university has its presence in London, Beijing, Dublin, Jerusalem and Rome.

Notre Dame has excellent retention and graduation rates, with 98% of students returning for their second year and 95% of students graduating in time. Notre Dame provides popular courses like business, economics, anthropology and Irish language.

Notre Dame University has more than 12,000 students with more than 8500 undergraduate and 4000 graduate and professional students.

RESIDENCE HALLS

The residence halls are the focus of student social life. Every hall is led by a rector, who is a full-time live in professional who serves as a leader. Rector directs the hall community, coordinating with professors, academic advisor and counselor to watch over students in their academics as well as in their personal development. He hires and supervises the hall staff. Many resident halls have a priest or faculty member in residence as faculty fellow who provides an additional academic and intellectual experience.

STUDENT CLUBS

The University of Notre Dame has over 400 active students who got their financial aid from the student run Club Coordination Council. There are a variety of student clubs on campus that includes nine from different states, about three dozen clubs that represent different nationalities and clubs dedicated to Catholic Theology, diverse faith practices, professional development, foreign affairs, arts and women’s empowerment.

STUDENT UNION 

The Notre Dame Club Coordination Council is the branch of the Student Union of the University. It is responsible for communicating issues facing undergraduates and providing funds for undergraduate clubs.

STUDENT EVENTS 

The University’s intramural sports program ranked as no one in the country in 2021. Over 700 teams participate in the basketball tournament and the Notre Dame Men’s Boxing Club hosts the annual Bengal Bouts tournament to raise money for the Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh. There are many events hosted by the residence hall of the university like Keenan Revue, the Fisher Hall Regatta, The Kennan hall Muddy Sunday, the Morrisey Hall Medallion Hunt, the Dillon hall Pep Rally etc.

STUDENT MEDIA

Notre Dame’s students run 9 media outlets that are three newspapers, a radio and television station and several journals and magazines. The magazine named The Scholastic began in 1876 is the oldest magazine which is issued twice in a month. Other magazines are like The Juggler, The Observe and The Irish Rover etc. The Television station named NDtv is a full 24 hour channel.

SPORTS AND FITNESS

The University of Notre Dame’s sports teams are known as the Fighting Irish. They compete as a member of The National Collegiate Athletic Association. Notre Dame has facilities for basketball, baseball, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving.
