University History

In 1890, the University of Oklahoma (OU) was founded. It is a public research university in Norman, Oklahoma. In August 1892, the university's first president, David Ross Boyd, arrived in Norman and at the same time first batch of students was enrolled. Since David Boren became president, the University of Oklahoma experienced amazing growth, with an increase in new developments throughout including the purchase of land for OU-Tulsa, the new Gaylord Hall, Price Hall, the ExxonMobil Lawrence G. Rawl Engineering Practice Facility, Devon Energy Hall, the Wagner Student Academic Services Center, the Research and Medical Clinic, the expansions of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, and the National Weather Center. Harroz was announced as the 15th President of the University of Oklahoma on May 9, 2020, by the Board of Regents.

University Infrastructure & Services

Campus

The Norman Campus at the University of Oklahoma has three sections; North Campus, South Campus and Main Campus. Norman Campus has various colleges and schools - The largest school, the College of Arts and Sciences, The Price College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Education, Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, and College of Liberal Studies. It consists some smaller schools also- College of Architecture and Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, Earth and Energy, the Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts, and the College of Law.

The Main campus of Norman at the University of Oklahoma is surrounded by Boyd Street in the north, Timberdell Road in the south, Chautauqua Avenue in the west, and Jenkins Avenue in the east. The main campus has three Colleges, University housing, student activity and fitness facilities, and the Oklahoma Center for Continuing Education.

The North campus of Norman at University of Oklahoma is known as the research campus, it includes University of Oklahoma Max Westheimer Airport, the Radar Operations Center, the old National Severe Storms Laboratory facility, the university’s OKDHS Training and Research Center, and Merrick Computer and Technology Center. Other research facilities which are part of Gallogly College of Engineering, Automation Laboratory, Laboratory for Electrical Energy and Power Systems, and Laboratory for Smart Buildings also work at the North campus. The College of Aviation also runs a North campus which is accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board as one of only 29 accredited colleges in the United States of America.

South campus of Norman at University of Oklahoma has university-owned apartments and athletic complexes. College of Law building and larger law library and courtroom are also present at this campus. 

Libraries

The University of Oklahoma Libraries play an important role in the University’s educational and research work. University libraries are focused to provide top-notch library resources, programs, and services to the students. It contains over 4.7 million volumes and consists of three libraries which include the Architecture Library, the Fine Arts Library, and the Geology Library. The University’s libraries are dedicated towards welcoming the amazing environment for a diverse community of students and faculty. The libraries provide flexible and well-equipped surroundings for everyone's research and learning needs. They support the student learning experience, creation and administration of knowledge, and also contribute to advancements in teaching and research programs.

Housing services

On-campus- University Housing of Oklahoma provides six residence halls. Each residence hall has its own RSA (Resident Student Association) office and its own computer lab and laundry facilities. Students can select a room of their choice based on costs, hall facilities, location, and availability. Room design vary per hall and include multi-person units, singles, suites and some apartment-style rooms with kitchens for convenient living. Through university’s affinity housing students can live in groups of like-minded students who share the same love for sports, literature, film and course. 

Off-campus- Many students find it pocket-friendly to live off-campus. The University of Oklahoma assists students in finding off-campus housing and roommates. University owns many properties nearby the campus to provide convenient housing to students, faculty and staff nearby the university. 

Medical services

 University of Oklahoma Health Services provides medical services to students. The staff consists of physicians and nurses who are dedicated towards their work and provide high quality medical care to students.
