University of Rhode Island History

The University of Rhode Island is a Public Land-grant Research University with its main campus located in Kingston, Rhode Island. The University first chartered in 1888 as experiment station and agricultural school. The university initially started as the Rhode Island college of Agriculture and Mechanic arts and later on over the period of time the college went through various developments and now it is famously known as University of Rhode Island. The University now has around 18,000 students coming from 48 states and 76 countries.

The main campus of the university is located in the historic village of Kingston.
