University History

 In 1794, University of Tennessee was founded, two years before Tennessee became 16th state. The university’s former name was Blount college. It is a public land-grant research university in Knoxville, Tennessee and a flagship campus of the University of Tennessee system. The university has collections of the papers of all three U.S. presidents from Tennessee—Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, and Andrew Johnson. In 2014, University of Tennessee was named a Purple Heart University. It was one of the six such schools in the nation. The designation was made by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Department of Tennessee, and it was based on the university’s determination to veterans and the military community. In 2019, Donde Plowman was appointed as University’s ninth chancellor. Since 1897, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees to students.

Campuses

The Agricultural campus at University of Tennessee offers undergraduate majors, undergrad minors, graduate programs, and veterinary medicine major courses. The campus supports academics, research and aiding the community.  In 1972, the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility (Body Farm) was founded by Dr. William M. Bass and is  situated near the University of Tennessee Medical Center. On March 16, 2009, the university constructed the Cherokee campus on 188-acres of land in downtown Knoxville which is devoted to nanotechnology, neutron science, materials science, energy, climate studies, environmental science, and biomedical sciences. The Space Institute at University of Tennessee supports research and graduate studies in aerospace engineering and other related streams. 

Libraries

Libraries at University of Tennessee serve the flagship campus of Tennessee’s premier public research university. The University is awarded with the Carnegie Foundation Research 1 designation, which is given to doctoral universities with very high research activities in the field. The University’s Libraries supports the teaching, research, and is focused towards enhancing the academic experience of each student on the campus. The students are assisted with top-notch print and electronic collections, reference and instructional services, and high- quality facilities and technological resources at the university libraries. There are different libraries present on campus like- John C. Hodges Library, Webster C. Pendergrass Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library, and George F. DeVine Music Library. The University of Tennessee is a national leader in Digital collections of books. The University of Tennessee Libraries is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, HathiTrust, the Library Publishing Coalition, LYRASIS, and the Center for Research Libraries.

Housing services

On-campus- University Housing of Tennessee provides residence halls, apartments and family housing. Students can select the room of their choice based on costs, hall facilities, location, availability. Room design vary per hall and include multi-person units, singles, studios, suites and some apartment-style rooms with kitchens for convenient living. Through university’s affinity housing students can live in groups of like-minded students who share the same love for sports, literature, film and course. 

Off-campus- The Centre of Student Engagement at Student Life Division of University of Tennessee assists students in finding off-campus housing and roommates. They provide convenient housing to students, faculty and staff at nearby universities. 

Medical services

 University of Tennessee’s Student Health Center provides medical services to students. The staff consists of physicians and nurses who are dedicated towards their work and provide high quality medical care to students. The medical services include preventive services, evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic medical illnesses, pharmacy, dentistry, diagnostics and health education to make life easier at University of Tennessee.
