The Institution of Vermont (UVM) is a public land-grant research university in Burlington, Vermont, USA, that is also known as The University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. It was the fifth institution of higher instruction in the New England region of the United States when it was founded in 1791, Smaking it one of the country's oldest universities. It is also one of the eight original "Public Ivy" universities in the United States. It belongs to the "R2: Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity" category.

University of Vermont History

The University of Vermont was established in 1791 as a private university, the same year that Vermont became the 14th state in the United States. Ten years later, the university began accepting students. The Rev. Daniel C. Sanders, the school's first president, was hired in 1800 and served for seven years as the only faculty member. The first class graduated in 1804 after starting in 1801. The University of Vermont and State Agricultural College was founded in 1865 when the university united with Vermont Agricultural College (founded on November 22, 1864, following the passing of the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act). The institution was given 150,000 acres that it later sold for $122,626. The State of Vermont contributes 6.8% of the University of Vermont's annual budget of around $600 million.
