Washington University was established in1883 by St. Louis business, political and religious leaders, led by Wayman Crow and William Greenleaf Eliot. The University got the Charter from the Missouri General Assembly. The University is named after the nation’s first president George Washington. In 1867 the university opened the first private law school and in 1882 Washington University had expanded to many departments.

Danforth Campus

It is the main campus of Washington University, earlier known as Hilltop campus and is located between Forest Park Parkway, Wydown Boulevard, North Big Bend Boulevard and North Skinker Boulevard. It includes –

The campus has its renovation in 2019 which included the Gary M. MEDICAL CAMPUS

Washington University Medical Center comprises 164 acres, along the eastern edge of Forest Park. It is home to the Washington University School of Medicine and its associated teaching hospitals. Olin Residence hall of the campus provides residential services for 200 medical and graduate students. The medical campus includes –

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Washington University has over 300 undergraduate student organizations on campus, most of them funded by the Student Union; it has one of the largest student government budgets in the country. The University has a large number of students run musical groups on campus including 12 official a cappella groups. 

The campus newspaper is Student Life. It is published twice a week under the University’s Student Media.

 It also boasts a successful bridge team and has the largest bridge club of all colleges in the country.

ACCOMMODATION 

Washington University is number one on the Princeton Review of “Best College Dorms” of 2020. More than 50% of undergraduate students live on campus. Danforth campus is the location of all the freshman buildings as well as several other buildings which are setup as a traditional residential building system. Another group of residences which is known as the Village, located in the northwest corner of Danforth campus; these are only open to upperclassmen and January Scholars. 

STUDENT MEDIA

The Washington University supports 4 major student run media outlets. The student newspaper called Student Life is available to all students. KWUR is the official radio station which attracts an audience in the immediate surroundings. WUTV is the university’s closed-circuit television channel. The university also publishes academic journals to glossy alumni magazines to WUnderground, the student run satirical newspaper.

SPORTS AND FITNESS

Washington University’s sports teams are called Bears. They are the members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. They participate in various tournaments. The University has the facilities for Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Outdoor Track and Field. The University also has a club sports program which has teams ranging from men’s volleyball to women’s ultimate freebee. Washington University is also home to Francis Field which was the site of the 1904 Summer Olympics.
