Education in medicine in the UK mostly starts with an undergraduate program that lasts for 5 to 6 years depending on the university and the program. After successful completion of 5 to 6 years of learning you will be eligible to apply for, the guaranteed clinical opportunity provided by the NHS – National Health Service, foundation year 1 in the UK where you will have an opportunity to sharpen your skills to be a doctor with hands-on experience at operational, technical and medical levels along with a monetary benefit of 2000 to 3000 pounds a month as a stipend.

If your performance has been satisfactory in foundation year 1 then the local foundation school from where you completed foundation year 1 will issue a certificate of experience to General Medical Council (GMC) for you to receive a license to practice medicine as an unsupervised doctor in the foundation year 2.

Foundation year 1 is crucial as this experience will act as a catalyst to narrow down the specialization for your specialty. Specialty training takes 3 to 8 years to complete depending on the specialization opted. For instance: A General practitioner (GP) specialty takes about 3 years to complete whereas Neuro or Cardio Specialty takes about 6 years to complete.

Specialty training is fully government-funded at NHS designated hospitals for Jr. Doctors. Salary for a Jr. The doctor starts at 4000 pounds approximately. Upon successful completion of Specialty training, Jr. Doctors will be licensed consultants. 

Eligibility for Admission in UK Medicine Universities

To be eligible to apply for an undergraduate medical program in the UK, a basic requirement for most of the universities would be to have 

  1. AAA in A levels with at least three sciences with Chemistry and Biology as mandatory subjects and Physics or Maths or Psychology as the third subject
  2. Minimum requirement of 37 points in IB including Chemistry and Biology at Higher Level(HL) as mandatory subjects and either Physics or Maths at Standard Level(SL) could be an advantage
  3. IELTS score of an overall 7.5 band with no less than 7.0 on each component of the test
  4. UCAT - University Clinical Aptitude Test
  5. BioMedical Aptitude Test

UCAT – University Clinical Aptitude Test or BMAT – BioMedical Aptitude Test or both must be taken as about 30 universities in the UK require the UCAT score and about 10 universities including Oxford and Cambridge require the BMAT score to complete the application on UCAS for undergraduate admission.

MD – Doctor of medicine is a postgraduate research study in the UK that is academically equivalent to Ph.D. and can be pursued upon 

  • completion of a UK medical degree 
  • meeting the eligibility to avail provisional or full registration with the General Medical Council to practice medicine
  • Being a Junior Doctor (ST1 grade) at one of the universities affiliated health institutions or at an NHS institution.
  • If you have recently been a resident in the UK, you may apply for a University-based funding program or UK government postgraduate loans. Funding depends on the type of course, the duration of the course and the status of your residency in the UK. Part-time MD programs may not be considered for scholarships.

An average tuition fees for an undergraduate program can get up to £40,000 per year however the fee structure varies from university to university based on the course outline.
