4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program

University of Southampton

Program Overview

This MEng in Mechanical Engineering/Biomedical Engineering is a unique blend of engineering, biology, and medicine, designed to equip you with the skills to create, develop, and test medical devices. You’ll dive deep into specialized areas like implants, biomaterials, orthopaedics, and human biomechanics, setting you up for a fulfilling career as a chartered engineer.

Course Highlights:

  • The first two years cover essential core content shared with Mechanical Engineering, helping you build a solid foundation.
  • In years three and four, you’ll delve into biomedical subjects such as human body mechanics, orthopaedic biomechanics, and cutting-edge medical technologies.
  • You’ll have access to state-of-the-art design workshops and engineering labs.
  • Show off your projects at the Engineering Design Show.
  • There’s also an optional year in industry, giving you valuable paid experience in the real world.

You can take advantage of opportunities to study abroad in your second year.

Learning Methods:

  • Engaging lectures and tutorials
  • Hands-on coursework and labs
  • Collaborative group and individual projects
  • Independent study

You’ll also get the chance to work alongside students from other engineering fields and utilize the computational tools that are shaping modern healthcare analysis.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Year 2: At the end of this year, you have the opportunity to apply for a semester abroad.
  • Year 3: This year, you'll dive into an individual project, which usually involves either a design or research-focused task.
  • Year 4: You'll be part of a group design project, often linked to cutting-edge research or real-world industry challenges. This is your chance to put your engineering and scientific skills to work, creating practical solutions.
  • Year in Industry (Optional): If you choose, you can take on a paid industrial placement, which will extend your course to five years and give you some invaluable professional experience.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Pursue a career in medical device development, clinical engineering, biomechanics, biomaterials, rehabilitation engineering, or pharmaceutical technology.

  • Opportunities in industries such as healthcare, medical imaging, diagnostics, prosthetics, and wearable health technologies.

  • Further academic study through taught master's degrees (e.g., MSc Biomedical Engineering, MSc Medical Physics), research degrees (MPhil/PhD), or medical school entry for qualified candidates.

  • Potential to register as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with an accredited MEng or appropriate combination of BEng and MSc, enhancing professional standing.
