Program Overview

The MEng in Medical Engineering is designed to equip you with the skills to create, develop, and evaluate cutting-edge healthcare technologies, all while addressing the increasing needs of our aging population. Over four years, this degree blends essential engineering principles with insights from medicine and healthcare, preparing you to tackle the challenges faced by today’s healthcare systems.

You will:

  • Design assistive technologies and systems that enhance diagnosis, treatment, and patient monitoring.
  • Engage in hands-on projects, including both individual and collaborative design work throughout your studies.
  • Utilize state-of-the-art research facilities, such as mechanical, electronics, biomechanics, and bioengineering labs.
  • Gain valuable industry experience through work placements, guest speakers, and real-world design projects.
  • Learn to integrate clinical, safety, ethical, and commercialization aspects into your medical engineering practice.

In your first year, you’ll dive into core subjects like engineering science, mathematics, and design. As you progress, you’ll deepen your knowledge with specialized modules such as Biomaterials, Orthopaedic Biomechanics, and Robotic Systems.

The program emphasizes practical lab work, individual and group projects, and independent study. You’ll have the support of a personal academic tutor and a senior tutor to help guide your academic journey.

Additionally, this degree offers optional industrial placements and sets you up for exciting careers in healthcare technology, medical device design, and beyond.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • An industrial placement is available, extending the course to 5 years.
  • In Year 3, you'll complete an individual project.
  • In Year 4, you'll undertake a group design project.

 

 

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Pursue a career in medical device development, clinical engineering, biomechanics, biomaterials, rehabilitation engineering, or pharmaceutical technology.

  • Opportunities in industries such as healthcare, medical imaging, diagnostics, prosthetics, and wearable health technologies.

  • Further academic study through taught master's degrees (e.g., MSc Biomedical Engineering, MSc Medical Physics), research degrees (MPhil/PhD), or medical school entry for qualified candidates.

  • Potential to register as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with an accredited MEng or appropriate combination of BEng and MSc, enhancing professional standing.

  • Entrepreneurial opportunities in health-tech startups or innovation hubs focused on biomedical solutions.

  • Average earnings: £30,000, 15 months after the course 

  • 85% of the students go on to work and/or study
