Chemistry with International Placement MChem

4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program

University of Warwick

Program Overview

The MChem Chemistry with International Placement at Warwick gives you a deep understanding of chemistry while giving you the chance to spend 3–6 months abroad on a real research project. It’s perfect for students who love exploring science hands-on and want to combine top-notch chemistry study with international experience.

Curriculum structure

Year One: You’ll get to grips with the foundations of chemistry—organic, inorganic, and physical—while sharpening your lab skills and learning how to analyse and interpret data. Core modules cover reaction mechanisms, thermodynamics, and practical lab work that build your confidence in real-world chemistry.

Year Two: Now it gets exciting! You’ll dive deeper into materials chemistry, chemical biology, and computational chemistry, applying theory to real problems. You’ll also strengthen your independent research skills and start thinking about what areas excite you most.

Year Three: This year is all about adventure—literally. You’ll take your international placement, working in a research lab abroad for 3–6 months. Alongside that, optional modules let you explore areas like energy materials, polymers for drug delivery, or computational reaction prediction, tailoring the year to your interests.

Year Four: In your final year, you’ll lead a major individual research project, tackling topics like novel catalysts, renewable polymers, or advanced sensors. You’ll also have the freedom to choose optional modules that expand your knowledge or deepen your expertise.

Focus areas

Materials chemistry · Sustainable energy & catalysis · Chemical biology · Computational & data-driven chemistry · International research experience

Reputation (employability rankings)

Warwick Chemistry is one of the UK’s leading departments, with research rated as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent.” Around 90% of graduates go into graduate-level jobs or further study within 15 months, and Warwick is one of the top universities targeted by UK graduate employers.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Warwick, chemistry isn’t just something you read about—it’s something you do. From your very first year, you’ll get hands-on experience in modern labs, learn to use cutting-edge digital tools, and develop the practical skills that employers and researchers value. The highlight of the programme is your international placement, where you’ll work in a real research lab overseas, collaborating with experts and gaining insight into how chemistry is applied around the world. Along the way, you’ll have access to excellent libraries, flexible study spaces, and support for independent research projects.

Some of the key ways you’ll gain practical experience include:

  • State-of-the-art teaching labs: Carry out experiments in organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, putting theory into practice from your first year.

  • Digital and computational tools: Learn data analysis, modelling, and computational chemistry software to support your research.

  • International placement (Year Three): Spend 3–6 months in a research lab abroad, working on real projects, developing teamwork and problem-solving skills in a global environment.

  • Individual research project (Year Four): Design, execute, and present your own extended research project with guidance from academic supervisors.

  • Libraries and study spaces: Use the University Library, the Oculus learning hub, and modern lecture theatres to support your study and independent research.

  • Additional research opportunities: Take part in summer research projects or work placements, supported by the Department of Chemistry and Warwick’s Student Opportunity team.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from Warwick’s MChem with International Placement opens doors to exciting careers in chemistry and beyond. You could work as a research chemist, materials scientist, drug discovery associate, or even move into consultancy in the chemical industry. Because you’ll have combined rigorous academic training with real-world international research experience, you’ll stand out to employers and postgraduate programmes alike.

Here’s how Warwick helps you get there:

  • Careers support: The University’s dedicated Careers Service and the Department of Student Opportunity offer one-to-one guidance, workshops, networking events, and help finding internships or placements tailored to chemistry students.

  • Graduate outcomes: Around 90% of Warwick chemistry graduates go into graduate-level jobs or further study within 15 months, with typical starting salaries around £26,000, rising to £30,500 after a few years.

  • Industry connections: Strong links with companies like RxCelerate and other chemical research partners give you access to real-world projects and networking opportunities.

  • Accreditation: The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, meaning your degree meets professional standards and carries long-term recognition.

  • Diverse career paths: Graduates pursue roles in sustainable materials, pharmaceuticals, energy, teaching, consultancy, and more.

Further academic progression:
If you’re keen to continue learning, you could move on to postgraduate study such as an MSc or PhD in areas like materials chemistry, chemical biology, computational chemistry, or energy materials. Your international research placement and final-year project will give you a head start, making you well-prepared for research roles or an academic career.
