4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program
The MChem Chemistry, Green Principles and Sustainable Processes (with a year abroad) at the University of York is perfect if you’re passionate about chemistry but also care about making a real-world impact. You’ll learn how to design chemical processes that are not just effective, but also environmentally responsible, preparing you for a career where science meets sustainability.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1
In your first year, you’ll get a solid grounding in the key areas of chemistry: organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and biological. Modules like Foundations of Chemistry 1–4 and Introductory Skills and Practical 1 & 2 introduce you to chemical structures, reactions, and lab techniques, giving you the essential toolkit for more advanced work later on.
Year 2
Your second year digs deeper, blending advanced chemical concepts with sustainability. Through modules such as Advanced Chemistry Concepts and Applications 1–3, Advanced Skills and Practical 1 & 2, and Green and Sustainable Chemistry, you’ll explore how chemical processes can be designed to reduce environmental impact while honing your practical and problem-solving skills.
Year 3
In year three, you’ll tackle the frontiers of chemistry, including Frontiers of Chemistry 1–3, Atmospheric Chemistry, Climate Change and Net Zero, and a Miniproject with Sustainable Advanced Synthesis. You’ll start applying your knowledge to real-world challenges, like climate-related chemistry problems, and complete a mini research project to explore your own scientific interests.
Year 4 (Year Abroad)
The final year is your chance to take your chemistry skills global. Spending a year at a partner university abroad, you’ll complete an Advanced Research Project, develop professional research skills, and learn how to communicate complex findings effectively. This experience not only strengthens your science skills but also gives you international exposure.
Focus areas:
Green chemistry, sustainable processes, international research experience, advanced synthesis, climate-focused chemistry
Learning outcomes:
You’ll gain the ability to understand and apply advanced chemistry principles, design and conduct experiments safely, analyze results, communicate findings clearly, plan and carry out a major research project abroad, and develop professional skills like teamwork, creativity, and self-management.
Professional alignment (accreditation):
This degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry and meets the requirements for Chartered Chemist (CChem) status.
Reputation (employability rankings):
The University of York’s chemistry programs are highly respected, ranked 6th in the UK by the 2026 Complete University Guide.
At York, chemistry isn’t just something you read about — it’s something you do. From your very first year, you’ll be in labs experimenting, working on group projects, and learning how chemistry can make a real difference in sustainability. As you progress, your practical work becomes more open-ended, giving you the chance to design experiments, tackle research questions, and even spend a year abroad applying your skills in an international lab environment. You’ll also get hands-on experience with cutting-edge instruments and techniques used in real research and industry, preparing you for a career in green chemistry.
Here’s a glimpse of what this looks like in practice:
Work in state-of-the-art labs in the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE), with access to specialized equipment like microwave reactors, supercritical CO₂ reactors, and analytical instruments.
Complete team-based practical projects from the first year, building collaboration and problem-solving skills.
Participate in small-group workshops and tutorials, gradually moving to independent, open-ended experiments as you advance.
Use advanced analytical tools such as NMR, mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and chromatography, giving you skills straight from a research lab.
Undertake a year abroad project, conducting supervised research at an international partner university and applying your knowledge in a real-world context.
Engage with industry through the GCCE’s Industrial Engagement Facility, learning how sustainable chemistry works in practical, commercial settings.
Benefit from well-equipped teaching and research spaces, including the F‑block teaching labs and research labs on the Campus West site, designed for both foundational experiments and advanced research.
Graduating from this programme sets you up for careers where chemistry meets sustainability. You could become a Research Scientist developing greener chemical processes, a Sustainability Consultant advising industries on eco-friendly solutions, a Regulatory or Compliance Officer in chemicals or pharmaceuticals, or work in Product Innovation helping bring safer, more sustainable products to market. Your degree doesn’t just give you knowledge — it gives you the practical and professional tools to succeed in the real world:
Careers & Placements support: York’s dedicated team helps you find internships, placements, and graduate jobs, with CV guidance, interview prep, and access to employer networks.
Employment outcomes: Recent data shows that around 71% of graduates from this chemistry programme move into highly skilled work soon after finishing.
Professional accreditation: The degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, meeting the criteria for Chartered Chemist (CChem) status — a credential that stays with you for your career.
Industry links: The Chemistry Department works closely with companies and research organisations, so the skills you learn are directly relevant to today’s green chemistry challenges.
Further Academic Progression:
After finishing your MChem, you could continue your studies with a postgraduate degree, such as an MSc in Green Chemistry, or pursue doctoral research. This opens doors to advanced research roles, specialist industry positions, or academic careers — giving you the freedom to focus on what excites you most about sustainable chemistry.
