MChem (Hons) Chemistry, Green Principles and Sustainable Processes (with a year in industry)

4 Years On Campus Accelerated-bachelors Program

University of York

Program Overview

This four-year MChem degree combines a deep understanding of chemistry with a focus on sustainability, showing you how chemical processes can be designed to be greener and more efficient. It’s ideal if you’re curious about solving real-world challenges, working on cleaner technologies, or contributing to sustainable industries.

Curriculum Structure:
Year 1: In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation across all major areas of chemistry, including organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, and biological chemistry. Modules like Foundations of Chemistry 1 & 2 and Introductory Skills and Practical 1 & 2 introduce you to chemical principles, lab techniques, and a small research-style project to get hands-on experience in the lab.

Year 2: The second year deepens your chemistry knowledge while introducing sustainable approaches. Through modules like Advanced Chemistry Concepts and Applications 1–3, Advanced Skills and Practical 1 & 2, and Green and Sustainable Chemistry, you’ll explore greener chemical methods, practical applications, and start thinking about chemistry’s impact on the environment.

Year 3: Year three focuses on advanced chemistry and sustainability. Modules such as Frontiers of Chemistry 1–3, Atmospheric Chemistry, Climate Change and Net Zero, Catalysis with Green Technologies, and the Miniproject with Sustainable Advanced Synthesis let you investigate cutting-edge research, sustainability challenges, and green catalysis, building skills for research or industry roles.

Year 4 (Industrial Placement Year): In your final year, you’ll spend a full year working in industry, applying what you’ve learned on real projects. Modules like Professional Research Development, Advanced Research Project (Industry), and Research Communication give you hands-on experience solving practical problems in green chemistry, working closely with professional chemists.

Focus areas: Green chemistry, sustainable manufacturing, catalysis, chemical process design, life-cycle assessment, industrial collaboration.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the program, you’ll be confident in designing and running experiments, interpreting results, applying chemical principles in practical and industrial settings, communicating findings clearly, and managing projects independently. You’ll also develop valuable professional skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and commercial awareness.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, meeting the standards for Chartered Chemist (CChem) status.

Reputation (employability rankings): York ranks 7th in the UK for Chemistry in the 2025 Complete University Guide and 5th in the UK in the 2025 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From day one, you’ll be getting hands-on in some of the best chemistry labs in the UK. The program is designed so you’re not just learning theory — you’ll be doing real experiments, working in teams, and applying what you learn to solve practical problems. You’ll have access to the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence (GCCE), a world-leading hub for sustainable chemistry research, and by your final year, you’ll spend a full year in industry putting your skills to work in a professional setting. Here’s how experiential learning comes to life on this course:

  • Work in fully equipped teaching and research labs, exploring green synthesis, catalysis, and sustainable chemical processes.

  • Undertake mini research projects from Year 1, letting you apply lab techniques, design experiments, and analyse real data.

  • Spend Year 4 on a placement in industry, gaining practical experience and seeing how green chemistry works in real companies.

  • Collaborate with peers on lab projects and practical modules, developing teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Use advanced instrumentation and pilot equipment in the GCCE’s Industrial Engagement Facility to experience professional chemical processes first-hand.

  • Learn to handle digital tools for data analysis, spectroscopy, chromatography, and process modelling to interpret experiments effectively.

  • Engage with York’s specialist research groups and centres, attend seminars, and connect with postgraduate students working on cutting-edge sustainability projects.

  • Access the university’s libraries and online resources to support research, practical work, and deeper understanding of green chemistry.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from this programme means you’ll be ready to step straight into roles where chemistry meets sustainability. Many of our students go on to work as Fuels Technology Chemists, Production Chemists in sustainable manufacturing, Product Research Scientists, or Regulatory Officers ensuring environmental compliance. With your year in industry and focus on green processes, you’ll stand out to employers and have hands-on experience that really counts.

Here’s how York supports you and your career journey:

  • You’ll benefit from the Royal Society of Chemistry accreditation, which meets the standards for Chartered Chemist (CChem) status — a real boost for your long-term professional career.

  • Industry connections through the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence and its Industrial Engagement Facility, collaborating with companies like Croda and Synthomer, give you real-world experience.

  • Your year-in-industry placement lets you apply what you’ve learned in a professional setting, making you highly employable after graduation.

  • About 40 graduates per year go on to research or higher degrees, showing the strong academic and career pathways available.

  • You’ll graduate with a mix of technical chemistry knowledge, practical experience, and expertise in sustainability — making you attractive to employers in pharmaceuticals, energy, materials, and environmental sectors.

Further Academic Progression:
Once you’ve finished your MChem, you can continue your studies if you wish. Options include pursuing a Master’s in a specialised area, such as York’s MSc in Green Chemistry & Sustainable Industrial Technology, or moving into a PhD focused on sustainable chemistry, catalysis, or green manufacturing. Alternatively, you could jump straight into industry, gaining experience and potentially returning later for further qualifications.
