This degree integrates fundamental knowledge in sciences: chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, chemical engineering, sensory analysis, human nutrition and biotechnology. Students are encouraged to obtain as much professionally oriented or industrial experience as possible before the completion of the degree. The Food Science Field Trip, in February of Year 3, visits approximately 10 food-manufacturing plants around Australia and is a compulsory part of this degree. Year 4 includes training in research through an individual Honours research project. This degree explores how we can optimise the quality and safety of foods through appropriate processing and packaging. It prepares the graduate for employment in a large manufacturing sector.
