Program Overview

Deakin University – Bachelor of Design (Architecture)

Program Overview:
If you’ve ever dreamed of shaping the spaces people live, work, and play in, Deakin’s Bachelor of Design (Architecture) is your launchpad. Perfect for curious, hands-on thinkers, this degree blends creativity with practical problem-solving, giving you the skills to imagine, model, and communicate architectural ideas from the very first day.

Curriculum Structure:

Year 1:
Your journey starts with a solid grounding in architectural thinking and creative practice. In Architecture Design Studio 01: Thoughtscapes, you’ll explore spatial ideas while discovering how art, society, and materials shape the world around us. Alongside this, units like Art and Society and Building Materials Science help you sketch, model, and reflect on design in a real-world context. By the second trimester, you’ll sharpen your visual communication skills through Architecture Communication 02: Modelling and Architecture Design Studio 02: Matterscapes, while learning how construction and structures come together in practice.

Year 2:
As your confidence grows, you’ll tackle more complex design challenges that connect people, place, and environment. Studios like Earthscapes and Publicscapes encourage you to think broadly about context and community, while Construction and Structures 2 and Building Environmental Studies ensure your designs are grounded in how buildings actually work. You’ll also have the freedom to take an elective that sparks your curiosity beyond architecture, helping you see the bigger picture.

Year 3:
Here, everything comes together. You’ll refine your technical and communication skills in Architecture Communication 03: Documentation and explore contemporary design thinking in Contemporary Architecture. Your capstone, Architecture Design Studio 06: Superstudio, is your chance to take on a major design project, putting all your learning into practice like a true professional. Meanwhile, Construction and Structures 3 pushes you to think critically about how buildings are realised in the real world.

Focus Areas:
Creative design, sustainable and environmentally aware building, technical modelling, and professional communication.

Learning Outcomes:
By the time you graduate, you’ll think visually and critically, communicate confidently through drawing and digital tools, and tackle architectural challenges with creativity, practicality, and an understanding of social and environmental impact.
