Bachelor of Architectural Design/Bachelor of Built Environment (Honours) (Urban and Regional Planning)

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Queensland University of Technology

Program Overview

This double degree at QUT is a rare chance to think like both an architect and an urban planner. You’ll learn not just how to design beautiful, functional spaces, but also how to shape the way whole communities grow and thrive. It’s perfect for curious, creative students who want to combine design, environmental insight, and planning know-how to make cities healthier, fairer, and more vibrant.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year is all about building the foundations for the journey ahead. You’ll start sketching and modelling real spaces in architectural design studio and Designing the Built Environment units, while planning-focused courses like Introduction to Urban Analysis and Land‑Use Planning help you understand how towns and cities function and why thoughtful planning makes a difference.

Year 2
In your second year, you’ll start digging deeper. Architectural units such as Environmental Principles in Design and Urban Dwelling Studio focus on sustainability and human experience, while planning classes like Transport Planning and Planning Law show you how policies and infrastructure shape movement, development, and community wellbeing.

Year 3
By mid-program, theory meets practice. You’ll tackle larger architectural projects in Public Spaces and Tectonics studios, and get hands-on experience in planning through Site Planning and Stakeholder Engagement. Working with peers and industry partners, you’ll see firsthand how design, negotiation, and policy intersect in real-world projects.

Year 4
Now it’s time to connect the dots across disciplines. You’ll take on advanced architectural projects that push your creativity and technical skills, while planning courses like Property Development and Environmental Planning teach you how to balance environmental, cultural, and economic factors in shaping communities.

Year 5 + Honours
Your final year is your chance to lead. You’ll complete a Planning Theory and Ethics seminar and a major research project, tackling a real planning challenge with guidance from faculty. This capstone brings together the sensitivity of architecture with the strategy of urban planning, letting you graduate with a portfolio that shows both creative vision and practical impact.

Focus Areas
Creative architectural design, urban systems and planning, sustainability, and community impact.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The Bachelor of Architectural Design / Bachelor of Built Environment (Honours) in Urban and Regional Planning at QUT is all about doing—not just reading or memorizing. From your first studios, where you’ll tackle design challenges and build your visualisation skills, to later planning studios where you apply what you’ve learned to real-world problems, you’ll be learning by making, testing, and reflecting. Along the way, you’ll step straight into professional settings through structured work experience, and your final-year research project gives you the chance to dive into a real planning question with guidance from experienced faculty. This degree deliberately bridges the classroom and the real world, preparing you for meaningful careers in architecture, planning, and urban design.

Some of the hands-on learning experiences you can expect include:

  • Integrated design studios where you’ll take on architectural and planning problems and refine your design process over time.

  • Introductory and shared impact lab units that have you collaborating with students from other disciplines on real problems and solutions.

  • Visualisation training to help you effectively communicate your design ideas.

  • Professional work experience: 30 days (225 hours) in the planning industry to see how theory meets practice.

  • Urban and regional planning studios and projects in later years that put you in real planning scenarios.

  • A major research project in your final year, supervised by a faculty mentor, giving you the chance to explore and contribute to planning knowledge.

If you’re looking for a degree that blends creative design with practical planning skills and real professional engagement, this program at QUT gives you plenty of opportunities to build the experience and confidence you’ll need for a career that really makes an impact.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from QUT’s Bachelor of Architectural Design / Bachelor of Built Environment (Honours) in Urban and Regional Planning step confidently into careers that really shape the way we live. Many go on to roles where they influence how cities and regions grow, tackle real community and environmental challenges, and work across sectors to make people‑centred places. With this degree, you could find yourself working as an architect, an urban and regional planner, an urban designer, or in other roles that blend design, policy, and community impact. The combination of creative design and planning skills makes you versatile and ready for real‑world challenges.

Why this matters for you:

  • Hands-on experience for the workplace: QUT gives you real exposure to professional practice through studio projects and a required 30 days of approved work experience in planning. You’ll get a taste of what it’s like to work on real projects and start building connections in the industry early on.

  • A degree employers respect: QUT’s Architecture and Built Environment programs are recognised internationally and are highly regarded by employers. That reputation gives you confidence and strong graduate job prospects as you start your career.

  • Industry connections that count: From professional events to engagement with bodies like the Planning Institute of Australia, you’ll meet planners, developers, and government stakeholders. These networks often lead to opportunities and help you see how your learning applies in real contexts.

  • Accreditation and long-term pathways: The Honours component of the Built Environment degree is professionally accredited. If you go on to complete QUT’s Master of Architecture with practical experience, you’ll be on track for full architect registration in Australia—giving your degree even greater long-term value.

Opportunities for further study:
Once you finish this dual degree, you’re well placed to deepen your expertise. Many graduates move straight into QUT’s Master of Architecture, the standard route to becoming a registered architect. From there, you could explore specialised master’s programs or research degrees in urban design, sustainability, or advanced planning. The Honours component also gives you a strong foundation if you ever want to pursue a Master by Research or a PhD.
