Bachelor of Interior Architecture Honours

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of New South Wales

Program Overview

Program Overview

This program is designed for students who want to transform interior spaces into meaningful, functional, and innovative environments that shape how people live, work, and interact. You will explore interior architecture through a combination of creative design, spatial thinking, and real-world application, learning how to reimagine interiors across homes, workplaces, and cities.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You begin by building a strong design foundation, focusing on spatial thinking, visual communication, and introductory design studios. You explore how interiors function through subjects like design fundamentals, material exploration, and representation techniques, helping you understand space, form, and human interaction.

Year 2
Your learning becomes more applied, with a deeper focus on interior environments and technical development. You engage in studio projects that integrate materials, structures, and environmental considerations, while developing your ability to design functional and creative spaces.

Year 3
At this stage, you tackle more complex and conceptual design challenges. You work on advanced studio projects that address real-world interior architecture problems, combining sustainability, technology, and user experience in your design solutions.

Year 4 (Honours Year)
In your final year, you undertake a major design research project, allowing you to specialise and explore innovative ideas in interior architecture. You refine your professional portfolio and develop industry-ready design solutions through independent and studio-based work.

Focus areas (in a string):

Interior architecture, spatial design, material systems, sustainable interiors, human-centred design, adaptive reuse, workplace and urban interiors

Learning outcomes (in a string):

Develop creative and technical design expertise, design functional and innovative interior spaces, apply material and spatial knowledge, communicate design concepts professionally, and respond to social and environmental challenges

Professional alignment (accreditation):

Recognised by the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers (IFI), supporting professional recognition in interior architecture globally

Reputation (employability rankings):
