Bachelors of Sport Development / Business

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Griffith University Gold Coast Campus

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about sport and also love the idea of working in business, this double degree is an amazing fit. By studying Sport Development alongside Business, you’ll learn how sport, health and community all connect, while also building strong real-world skills in management, leadership and strategy. It’s perfect for anyone who dreams of turning their love for sport into a flexible career — whether that’s running community programs, managing facilities or events, coaching, or taking on leadership roles in sporting organisations.

Curriculum Snapshot

First Year
Your first year lays the foundations. You’ll explore what sport means for communities and public health, while also diving into the essentials of business and communication. It’s a year of discovery, where you start connecting your passion for sport with the world of management and planning — and begin shaping a clearer sense of where you want to go.

Second Year
In second year, things start to expand. You look deeper into human behaviour, psychology, sport development and sport management. You’ll get insight into the behind-the-scenes world of sport — understanding what it takes to engage communities, promote participation and make smart organisational decisions.

Third & Fourth Year
As you progress, you step into more advanced and practical learning. You might study coaching, event and facility planning, sport marketing, digital communication, and specialised business electives. You’ll gain hands-on skills that prepare you to manage clubs, lead programs, or coordinate events — not just in theory, but in real working environments.

Professional Reputation

Griffith is well-recognised internationally, and its Sport Development area has a strong standing in sport and leisure education. That means your degree carries weight with employers and helps open doors to opportunities both in Australia and overseas.

If you want a career where every day connects people, performance, business and community — this degree gives you the knowledge, experience and confidence to make it happen.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This is a really well-designed program that blends sport science, health, business and community impact — so you’re not just studying theory, but learning to build real-world capabilities that employers value. Through this dual degree you’ll graduate ready to design sport programs, manage events or facilities, lead community health initiatives, or work in sport business — all with hands-on experience under your belt. The structure is intentionally practical: you study subjects like physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, coaching, sport management and event management, and you get opportunities to apply that knowledge in real settings.

Here’s how the program gives you real, career-ready experience:

  • You learn sport science and coaching: courses in physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, and sports coaching help you understand what athletes and participants need — knowledge you can apply in real training or coaching environments.

  • You study sport management, business and marketing: you’ll build business skills to plan, market and manage sport events or programs, preparing you for roles in management, marketing, or administration of sport and recreation services.

  • You gain skills in health promotion and community development through sport: the program includes a specialist focus on designing sport systems and pathways to attract, retain and nurture participants, giving you experience in creating inclusive sport-oriented community initiatives.

  • You’re trained for facility, event and organisation work: with knowledge in sports management and event management, you’ll be equipped to work in sport facilities, recreation centres, community sport organisations, or manage events — giving you flexible career options.

  • Option for real-world placements: the program supports health/placement pathways (for example, health-related placements), meaning you can get practical experience working in relevant community, fitness, or sports settings during your studies.

  • A dual degree gives you broad flexibility: with both sport development and business credentials, you’ll be positioned for a wide range of roles — from athlete development and community sport promotion to business and marketing roles within sports organisations.

Progression & Future Opportunities

If you choose to study the Bachelor of Sport Development / Bachelor of Business at Griffith University, you’ll be setting yourself up for a career that blends your passion for sport with real-world business and management skills. Graduates from this program often land roles such as sports manager or administrator, event or facility coordinator for sports and recreation, health and fitness business manager, or sports marketing / development officer — these paths reflect how well the degree equips you for a wide range of roles across sport, health, business and community sectors.

Here’s what this means for you:

  • Griffith embeds practical, real-world experience into your learning. Through internships and work placements you’ll build hands-on experience in sport and business settings — not just theory.

  • Their employability support system is robust: you’ll have access to tools like CareerHub for resume building and interview prep, mentoring programs linking you with industry professionals, and support in building an e-Portfolio to showcase your skills and projects.

  • The business component ensures you graduate with solid management, marketing, and organisational skills, making you versatile — you won’t be limited to just coaching or training, but can also move into sports business management, marketing, or entrepreneurship.

  • Long term, the degree offers recognised accreditation and the kind of industry-ready profile that employers value, especially in sports organisations, community recreation, health & fitness businesses, and event management.

Further Academic Progression:
Once you complete this Bachelor’s, you have good options if you want to deepen your expertise. You could consider enrolling in an honours-year or postgraduate programme in sports science, sport management, or health promotion — ideal if you’re thinking about research, higher-level managerial roles, or even academic/administrative leadership positions. Alternatively, with your business grounding, you could pivot into broader business or management post-graduate studies, which opens doors into corporate roles linked to sports, health, wellness or community development.
