Queensland University of Technology

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Business (Finance) at QUT equips you with both strong technical finance skills and practical financial leadership experience. You’ll learn how to analyse markets, manage investments, and make strategic financial decisions — all through a curriculum designed to give you hands-on experience from day one.

This course is perfect if you’re curious about corporate finance, investment management, risk management, or financial markets and want to step confidently into the financial world.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year, you’ll build a solid foundation in business. You’ll take units like Dynamic Markets and Financial Performance and Responsibility, which introduce you to how businesses operate and how financial decisions affect them. You’ll also study fundamental economics, giving you a broad view of how markets and economies function.

Year 2
In the second year, you’ll dive deeper into core finance topics. Units such as Financial Markets, Corporate Finance, and Investments teach you about financial instruments, capital structures, and how to make smart investment decisions. You’ll also explore International Finance, gaining an understanding of how money flows around the globe.

Year 3

The Finance Capstone is the highlight — you’ll work in teams to analyse a real company, prepare a detailed report on its financial challenges, and pitch strategic recommendations to stakeholders. It’s a chance to showcase your knowledge and problem-solving abilities in a real-world setting.

Why This Degree Could Be a Great Fit for You
If you’re looking for a finance degree that balances theory with hands-on experience, QUT’s Finance major delivers exactly that. The international accreditations ensure your degree is highly respected, and the capstone project gives you experience and confidence that employers notice.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In the Bachelor of Business (Finance) at QUT, you’ll do far more than just study finance — you’ll experience it firsthand. The program is designed to equip you with practical skills that employers really value. You’ll work with current financial data, use industry-standard tools, and tackle projects that reflect the real challenges finance professionals face. It’s not just theory: you’ll make investment decisions, analyse companies, and present your findings, giving you confidence in applying what you learn in real-world situations.

One of the program’s highlights is QUT’s Economics and Finance Bloomberg Lab. Here, you’ll access live financial markets data through the Bloomberg terminal. This gives you the chance to run capital investment appraisals, assess company valuations, study portfolio allocations, and manage risk — all using the same tools top financial institutions rely on. Beyond the lab, you’ll work on a Finance Capstone unit, collaborating in teams on a real-world style case study for a company and presenting your solutions. This experience helps you sharpen decision-making, teamwork, and presentation skills, just as you would in a real finance role.

Together, these experiences build a strong foundation of technical skills, business insight, and confidence — preparing you for a successful career in finance. Here’s how you’ll gain hands-on experience:

  • Join student-managed investment fund units, researching and recommending real investment decisions, preparing reports, and pitching to an advisory committee.

  • Use the Bloomberg terminal in the Economics and Finance Bloomberg Lab to analyse live financial markets data and run financial modelling.

  • Collaborate in teams on the Finance Capstone, working on a live case study for a real company, then present your findings and recommendations.

  • Participate in real-world assessments, including capital investment appraisals, firm valuations, risk management, and portfolio analysis.

  • Take part in international case competitions and immersive field programs — students have travelled to Canada and spent intensive weeks working with global tech firms.

  • Engage with professional networks through student societies like the QUT Economics and Finance Society, connecting you to industry leaders and peer learning opportunities.

This blend of labs, real data, industry engagement, and teamwork ensures that when you graduate, you’re not just ready to enter the finance world — you’re already actively practising it.
