Bachelor of Business (Pathway to Teaching Secondary)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Western Sydney University Penrith

Program Overview

If you’re eager to step into the classroom and make a real difference in young lives, the Bachelor of Arts (Pathway to Teaching Secondary) at our university is your ideal launchpad. This three-year program is designed for those who already know they’d love to teach at the secondary level, giving you a strong major (like English, History, Mathematics or Language), paired with educational foundations that prepare you for a Master of Teaching (Secondary).

Curriculum Structure
Year 1
In your first year, you’ll build a solid base in understanding how society, culture and learning work together. You’ll dive into core units such as Australia and the World, Contemporary Society and Analytical Reading and Writing, shaping your ability to engage critically and communicate confidently. Concurrently, you’ll begin your chosen major (for example, English or Geography and Urban Studies) and an initial sub-major, setting the scene for your teaching subject specialisation.

Year 2
In the second year, you’ll deepen your first teaching area via major units that explore your subject in greater depth (for instance, Advanced Studies in Mathematics or Modern History). Alongside this, your Education Studies sub-major kicks in: units like Thinking Critically About Texts and Society or Diversity, Language and Culture challenge you to explore how teaching and learning happen, and consider your future role as a teacher. You’ll also pick up elective or sub-major units that refine an additional teaching area, giving you flexibility and options.

Year 3
In your final year, you’ll pull together everything you’ve learned. You’ll complete advanced major units (for example, Literature Studies, Japanese Advanced, or Music for Secondary Teaching) alongside Education Studies units that focus on real-world teaching contexts, pedagogy and curriculum. These might include specialised units in education theory and practice. By the end, you’ll be ready for transition into your Master of Teaching (Secondary), equipped with a first teaching area, second teaching area, and solid understanding of contemporary educational issues.

Focus Areas: English, History, Mathematics, Languages Other Than English, Geography & Urban Studies
Learning Outcomes: Develop subject-specialist knowledge, refine teaching and learning perspectives, cultivate strong communication and adaptability skills
Professional Alignment (Accreditation): This pathway is engineered to align with secondary teaching requirements so that when you finish your bachelor and then your Master of Teaching (Secondary), you are eligible for teacher accreditation and ready to step into classroom roles.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

If you’re looking to build a career that combines business knowledge with a passion for teaching, the Bachelor of Business (Pathway to Teaching Secondary) at Western Sydney University is a smart choice. This degree lets you develop real-world professional skills in accounting, marketing, management, economics and international business while also diving into contemporary education issues and subject-content units applicable to teaching. Here are the hands-on learning opportunities you’ll experience in this program:

  • Learning core business units such as accounting, applied finance, management and international business so you can apply real industry thinking.

  • Studying education-major units focused on things like sustainability, creativity, Australia-Asia relationships, outdoor education and neuroscience, giving you varied, practical frameworks for teaching.

  • Choosing subject-content units in modern history, geography and urban studies or mathematics — depending on your interests — readying you for teaching those disciplines.

  • Accessing the Adobe Creative Cloud suite as part of being at an Adobe Creative Campus, so you can build your digital, design and communication skills as part of your study.

  • Undertaking your major in Secondary Teaching in a setting that articulates with a Master of Teaching, meaning this Bachelor is built for the real career transition from student to teacher.
