Program Overview:
The Bachelor of Science at Federation University offers a flexible and well-rounded foundation in scientific study. You’ll have the freedom to shape your degree by choosing from thirteen different disciplines, including Biochemistry, Biology, Environmental Studies, and Geoscience. Throughout the program, you’ll strengthen your analytical, quantitative, and research abilities while developing expertise in your chosen field—equipping you for diverse careers in science, research, and industry.

Curriculum Structure:

First Year:
Your first year focuses on building core scientific skills and knowledge. You’ll explore essential subjects such as Principles of Biology, Chemistry 1, and Scientific Communication in your first semester. In the second semester, you’ll begin to connect your learning to professional contexts through Professional Identity (Science) and Scientific Practice, alongside your selected major and minor electives—helping you start tailoring your degree early on.

Second Year:
In your second year, you’ll dive deeper into your chosen major, gaining a stronger understanding of your discipline. This is also when you’ll take part in your first Co-operative Placement, where you’ll apply what you’ve learned in real workplace settings. You can continue building breadth and depth through elective units that complement your career goals.

Third Year:
Your final year consolidates everything you’ve learned. You’ll complete advanced-level units in your major, continue your electives, and take part in Co-operative Placement 2 (Science)—ensuring you graduate with both advanced disciplinary knowledge and practical, hands-on experience that employers value.

Focus Areas:
You can personalise your studies with major and minor combinations across a wide range of disciplines such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Ecology & Environmental Restoration, Geoscience, Food Science, Microbiology, Mathematics, and more. This flexibility allows you to align your studies with your interests and career ambitions.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the program, you’ll be able to:

  • Apply scientific principles and methods to real-world problems.

  • Collect, analyse, and interpret data effectively.

  • Communicate complex scientific information with clarity and confidence.

  • Demonstrate research skills and professional awareness within your chosen field.

  • Graduate as a capable, work-ready scientist prepared to make a meaningful impact.
