Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical and Sustainable Process) /Bachelor of Business

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Queensland University of Technology

Program Overview

At Queensland University of Technology, this double degree combines advanced chemical and sustainable process engineering with core business knowledge, preparing you to lead innovation in industries focused on energy, manufacturing, and environmental sustainability. It is ideal for students who want to understand both how industrial processes work and how engineering solutions are managed, commercialised, and scaled in real organisations.

You’ll study across QUT’s Gardens Point Campus (Brisbane CBD) for engineering and business, gaining access to modern engineering laboratories, business precinct facilities, and industry-connected learning environments.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you build strong foundations in both disciplines. Engineering studies introduce you to chemistry for engineers, engineering physics, and mathematical methods, while business units such as introductory economics and management principles help you understand how organisations operate. This year is designed to give you a balanced base in both technical problem-solving and commercial thinking.

Year 2

Year 2 develops your core engineering and business understanding further. You typically progress into thermodynamics, material and process fundamentals, alongside business subjects such as accounting and data analysis for decision-making. This is where you begin connecting how engineering systems are designed with how businesses evaluate cost, efficiency, and performance.

Year 3

In Year 3, the focus shifts toward applied engineering systems and strategic business learning. Engineering units such as chemical reaction engineering and process systems design run alongside business subjects like marketing and organisational behaviour. You begin to see how sustainable industrial processes are developed and managed within commercial constraints.

Year 4

This year becomes more advanced and industry-oriented. Engineering coursework focuses on sustainable process design, energy systems, and advanced chemical engineering principles, while business studies move into operations management and strategic decision-making. You also begin working on integrated projects that reflect real industrial and corporate challenges.

Year 5

In your final year, you complete capstone projects in both engineering and business. These projects often involve designing sustainable chemical processes while also developing a business model for implementation or commercialisation. You graduate with both technical engineering expertise and strong leadership, strategy, and management capability.

Focus Areas

Sustainable chemical engineering, process design, energy systems, business strategy, operations management, industrial innovation, and commercialisation of engineering solutions.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates are equipped to design and manage sustainable chemical processes while also understanding business strategy, finance, and operations. You’ll be prepared to work across technical and managerial roles, bridging the gap between engineering innovation and commercial decision-making.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The engineering honours component is designed to meet accreditation requirements set by Engineers Australia, supporting professional recognition as an engineer in Australia and internationally.

Reputation (Employability & Rankings)

Queensland University of Technology is recognised for strong graduate employability and close industry links, particularly in engineering, business, and applied innovation fields. It consistently performs well in global rankings such as QS World University Rankings for employer reputation and graduate outcomes in applied disciplines.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Queensland University of Technology, this double degree is designed around real industry practice, so you’re constantly applying engineering theory and business strategy to real-world problems. From chemical process systems to commercial decision-making, you’ll learn in environments that reflect how engineers and business leaders actually work together in industry. You’ll also move between engineering labs at Gardens Point Campus and business learning spaces within the QUT Business School, giving you exposure to both technical and corporate environments:

  • Work Integrated Learning (WIL) & Industry Placements : Embedded internships and industry projects allow you to work with engineering firms, manufacturing companies, and business organisations, applying chemical process knowledge in real commercial settings.
  • Capstone Industry Projects : Final-year integrated projects where you design sustainable chemical processes while also building business models for implementation, commercialisation, or scale-up.
  • Process Engineering Laboratories : Hands-on experience with chemical reaction systems, thermodynamics experiments, and process design testing using advanced engineering lab equipment.
  • Business Simulation & Decision Tools : Use of analytics platforms, financial modelling tools, and management systems to support real-world business decision-making and strategy development.
  • Engineering Design Software & Modelling Tools : Exposure to industry-standard engineering design and process simulation tools used for modelling chemical systems, energy efficiency, and production processes.
  • Interdisciplinary Team Projects : Group-based learning that combines engineering and business students to solve sustainability, production, and innovation challenges.
  • QUT Business School Learning Environment : Case-study based learning, entrepreneurship projects, and strategic management workshops focused on real industry problems.
  • Research & Innovation Centres : Access to QUT research strengths in sustainability, future industries, and applied engineering innovation through centres like the Institute for Future Environments.
  • Libraries & Digital Learning Resources : QUT’s modern library system supports access to engineering journals, business databases, technical standards, and market research tools essential for projects and assignments.

Progression & Future Opportunities
