Bachelor of Engineering Honours with a stream in Mechanical Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Macquarie University

Program Overview

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) offers a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering with a Diploma in Professional Engineering Practice. The five-year course seamlessly integrates mechanical systems, theoretical education, and a long stint in the industry, enabling the students to embark on various careers in engineering across sectors such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, energy, and infrastructure. Through a strong foundation in mechanical systems, design, materials, and thermal sciences, the students learn how to tackle practical problems using innovative engineering solutions through equipment provided to them.

Curriculum Structure
The curriculum aims to offer both depth in theory and practical competency. Major components are:
Core Engineering Studies: Courses that give a grounding in mathematics, physics, computing, and engineering principles.
Mechanical Engineering Major: Studies in dynamics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, control systems, mechanical design, and advanced manufacturing.
Professional Engineering Practice Stream: Designed to develop workplace skills and professional skills.
Capstone Project: A final-third-year team project where students apply what they have learned to solve hard, industry-relevant problems.
Electives: Students get the chance to pick from special topics to make the course more personalized according to their interests.
The course includes 240 credit points, two 6-month full-time internships, so that students can gain more than 48 weeks of real industry exposure.

Accreditation
The program is comprehensively accredited by Engineers Australia, making graduates globally recognized professionals who may apply for professional recognition in many countries.

Campus Location
The UTS campus is located in the heart of Sydney, the global city of Australia. The Faculty of Engineering and IT occupies a building of the newest technology, with access to world-class laboratories, facilities, and communal learning spaces.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

UTS is very much focused on learning by doing. The course is designed around rich, career-focused experiences:
Industry Internships: A centerpiece of the diploma, students complete two six-month internships in engineering firms. The internships fill the gap between theoretical and industry demands.
UTS Tech Lab and Prototyping Facilities: Students can solve engineering challenges using state-of-the-art fabrication equipment, test rigs, and simulation software.
Clubs and Competitions: They can become members of clubs like Engineers Without Borders, UTS Motorsports, and robotics clubs to have additional opportunities to learn technical and teamwork skills.
Global Opportunities: International exchange and internships allow students to broaden their horizon and build international networks.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The university's Careers Service and its specialist Internships and Industry Engagement Team provide career development support on an ongoing basis:
Career guidance, CV preparation, and one-to-one mentorship.
• Observations of engineering-themed career fairs and recruitment events.
• Conducted practice interviews and job-preparedness seminars to help students prepare for real opportunities.

Employability
The alumni of the program are extremely sought after in the industry and often go on to work as mechanical engineers, design engineers, project managers, aerospace engineers, and energy systems specialists. Many alumni get hired by companies like Atlassian, Arup, Tesla, Boeing, and Transurban, or even venture off to start their own company.

Further Academic Progression
For those who may want to pursue further study, some options include postgraduate awards like a Master of Engineering, an MBA in Engineering Management, or research-focused streams such as a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or Sustainable Energy Technologies.
