Bachelor's of Pharmacy (Honours)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Griffith University Gold Coast Campus

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) at Griffith University is designed for students who want to become highly skilled, patient-focused pharmacists with strong scientific and clinical expertise. It blends biomedical science with real-world pharmacy practice, preparing you for work in hospitals, community pharmacies, and the broader healthcare system.

Curriculum structure

Year 1 – Foundations of pharmaceutical science

In your first year, you build the core scientific base needed for pharmacy practice. You’ll study subjects like Chemistry for Pharmacy, Human Biology, and Introduction to Drug Discovery, which help you understand how medicines interact with the human body. This year focuses on developing strong knowledge in biology, chemistry, and health sciences to prepare you for advanced pharmacy studies.

Year 2 – Core pharmaceutical systems

In Year 2, you begin applying science to medicines and treatment. Key studies include Pharmacology, Pharmaceutics, and Microbiology, where you learn how drugs work, how they are formulated, and how infections are treated. You also develop skills in understanding pharmacokinetics, which explains how the body absorbs and processes medication.

Year 3 – Clinical pharmacy and patient care

This year shifts strongly toward clinical practice and real patient care. You’ll study Medicinal Chemistry, Therapeutics, and Clinical Pharmacy Practice, focusing on selecting and managing treatments for different health conditions. Practical learning and placements begin to play a bigger role, helping you build confidence in real healthcare environments.

Year 4 – Advanced practice and professional readiness

In your final year, you move into advanced pharmacy practice and professional training. You’ll complete Advanced Therapeutics, Pharmacy Practice Placement, and a Research Project, allowing you to work closely with patients and healthcare teams. This year is designed to prepare you for full professional registration and independent pharmacy practice.

Focus areas

Pharmacology, clinical pharmacy practice, medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, patient care, healthcare systems, and professional pharmacy ethics.

Learning outcomes

Graduates will be able to safely dispense and manage medications, apply clinical reasoning to patient treatment, communicate effectively in healthcare settings, and meet the professional standards required for pharmacy registration in Australia.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

This program is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council (APC) and supports eligibility for registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia, making it a direct pathway into professional pharmacy practice.

Reputation (employability & rankings)

Griffith University is widely recognised for its strength in health and medical sciences and is consistently ranked among leading universities globally. Its pharmacy graduates are well regarded for strong clinical readiness and high employability across Australia’s healthcare sector.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students in this program don’t just learn theory — they actively train as future pharmacists from early in the degree through hands-on clinical simulation, laboratory work, and real healthcare placements. At Griffith’s Gold Coast campus, learning is closely linked to real patient care environments, so you gradually build confidence in professional pharmacy practice using industry-standard facilities and supervised clinical experiences:

  • Clinical simulation training : Students develop patient counselling, dispensing, and clinical decision-making skills in simulated pharmacy environments designed to mirror real community and hospital settings.
  • Pharmacy practice placements : Supervised placements in community pharmacies and hospital settings across Queensland, allowing students to apply knowledge in real healthcare teams.
  • Health simulation & skills labs : Access to Griffith’s clinical training facilities for practising medication management, patient communication, and therapeutic problem-solving.
  • Pharmaceutics & science laboratories : Hands-on learning in specialised labs for compounding, formulation science, chemistry, and microbiology experiments.
  • Interprofessional learning activities : Collaborative training with students from medicine, nursing, and other health disciplines to reflect real hospital teamwork.
  • Research project (Honours component) : Final-year research experience where students investigate pharmacy-related clinical or pharmaceutical science topics under academic supervision.
  • Digital learning platforms : Use of Griffith’s online learning systems for coursework delivery, case studies, assessments, and clinical learning resources.
  • Library & health resources : Access to Griffith University’s Gold Coast Library with dedicated medical and pharmaceutical science databases and journals.

Experiential learning is deeply embedded across the degree so students graduate not only with strong scientific knowledge, but also real confidence in patient care and professional pharmacy practice.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) are prepared to enter a highly respected healthcare profession where they play a key role in patient safety, medication management, and public health. Most graduates move directly into pharmacy practice or further supervised training, with strong demand across hospitals, community pharmacies, and the pharmaceutical industry:

  • Griffith Careers and Employment Service : Dedicated career advisors, resume support, interview coaching, and employer networking events specifically for health science students.
  • Clinical placement pipeline : Structured placements in hospitals and community pharmacies across Queensland, helping students transition directly into employment networks.
  • Industry-linked training : Strong alignment with healthcare providers, pharmacies, and hospital systems through supervised practice placements and clinical partnerships.
  • Graduate employment outcomes : Pharmacy graduates in Australia are consistently among the more employable health science graduates, with strong full-time employment rates shortly after registration (commonly above 80% for health professional pathways, depending on registration timing and workforce demand).
  • Salary expectations : Entry-level registered pharmacists in Australia typically earn around AUD $70,000–$95,000 annually, with higher earnings in hospital or specialised clinical roles over time.
  • Professional accreditation value : The degree is accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council, ensuring eligibility for registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia, which is essential for practising as a pharmacist nationwide.
  • University–industry connections : Griffith maintains strong links with Queensland Health, hospital networks, and community pharmacy chains that support placements and graduate recruitment pathways.
  • Long-term career mobility : Accredited qualification enables work across Australia and supports recognition in many international pharmacy systems (subject to local registration requirements).

Further Academic Progression:

After completing this degree, graduates can pursue advanced study such as Master of Clinical Pharmacy, Master of Public Health, or specialised postgraduate research (Honours extension or PhD in pharmaceutical sciences). Some graduates also choose specialist clinical training pathways or move into pharmaceutical industry leadership roles over time.
