QUT’s Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is designed for students who want more than a traditional law degree. Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Building Legal Foundations

Your first year introduces the core principles of legal reasoning, justice, and legal communication while helping you develop the skills needed to succeed in law school. Through units such as LLB101 Introduction to Law, LLB104 Contemporary Law and Justice, and Torts, you begin learning legal analysis, research methods, statutory interpretation, problem-solving, and professional legal writing. QUT structures the first year to provide a strong transition into legal study while developing confidence in critical thinking and advocacy.

Year 2: Expanding Core Legal Knowledge

In second year, students deepen their understanding of Australia's legal framework and begin analysing more complex legal issues. Subjects such as Contract Law, Constitutional Law, and Commercial and Personal Property Law develop skills in interpreting legislation, understanding legal obligations, and applying legal principles to real-world disputes. Students also strengthen legal research and professional communication capabilities.

Year 3: Professional Practice and Advanced Legal Analysis

The third year focuses on developing higher-level legal reasoning and professional capabilities. Units including Administrative Law, Evidence, and Ethics and the Legal Profession prepare students for legal practice by exploring decision-making processes, courtroom evidence, professional responsibility, and ethical obligations. Students also gain greater exposure to advocacy, negotiation, and practical legal problem-solving.

Year 4: Honours-Level Specialisation and Future-Focused Law

The final year allows students to undertake advanced legal study and honours-level research while exploring specialist legal interests. Through subjects such as Corporate Law, Legal Research Capstone, and Advanced Law Electives, students engage with complex legal challenges and contemporary issues including legal technology, digital regulation, artificial intelligence, and innovation in legal practice. The honours component strengthens research, analytical thinking, and professional expertise for graduate employment or postgraduate study.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is approved by the Legal Practitioners' Admissions Board (LPAB) and satisfies the academic requirements for admission to the Australian legal profession. Graduates can continue with approved Practical Legal Training (PLT) to qualify as solicitors, and QUT is one of the few Australian law schools that also offers approved PLT through its Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
