Bachelors of Communication / Science(Biochemistry)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Griffith University Gold Coast Campus

Program Overview

This double degree combines training in biochemistry and molecular science with professional communication skills such as media, writing, and digital storytelling. It is designed for students who want a strong grounding in science while also learning how to explain complex ideas clearly to different audiences, including the public, industry, and research sectors.

It is well suited for students who are interested in biology and chemistry but also want to build careers where communication is just as important as scientific knowledge, such as science communication, research media, or science journalism.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In the first year, students build a strong foundation in both science and communication. You typically study introductory science units like Chemistry 1A, Chemistry 1B, and Fundamentals of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, alongside communication subjects such as Introduction to Communication and Media Writing. This year is focused on developing basic scientific understanding and essential writing and media skills.

Year 2

In the second year, the program becomes more focused and technical. Students move into subjects such as Protein Science and Genetics and Evolutionary Biology, while also studying communication areas like Digital Media Production and Professional Communication Practice. This stage strengthens laboratory skills and introduces applied communication techniques for real-world contexts.

Year 3

In year three, students engage with more advanced biochemistry content such as Metabolism and Biotechniques, where practical laboratory work becomes more detailed and research-focused. At the same time, communication studies shift toward applied areas like public relations and science communication, helping students learn how to translate scientific research into accessible formats.

Year 4

In the final year, students focus on integrating both disciplines through advanced electives, professional communication subjects, and a capstone or research project. This year prepares students for the workplace or further study by combining scientific expertise with advanced communication and analytical skills.

Focus Areas

Biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, laboratory techniques, science communication, media production, public relations, scientific writing, digital storytelling

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will be able to analyse biological systems at a molecular level, apply laboratory and research methods effectively, and communicate scientific ideas clearly across different platforms. They will also develop strong skills in writing, media production, and professional communication suited to science-related industries.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

This program is not linked to a single professional accreditation body but is developed with strong industry relevance, preparing graduates for roles across science, communication, media, and research sectors.
