The BFA (Acting) at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) is a rigorous, practice-led degree designed for aspiring actors who want to build a professional career across theatre, film, television, digital and music entertainment. Over three years, students develop advanced skills in acting, movement, music and voice, combining technical training with performance projects, productions and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Curriculum structure
Year 1: Students establish a strong foundation across acting, movement, music and voice through practical, experiential training. Units such as Engagement with Technique, Application of Technique and Performance and Ideas develop collaborative storytelling, independent research, character work and an understanding of how meaning is created through performance.
Year 2: Training becomes more demanding as students explore character transformation, complex texts and different theatrical styles. Through Engagement with Technique, Application of Technique and Contexts of Performance, students develop their characterisation skills and apply them across both theatrical and screen contexts, while also working on interdisciplinary projects.
Year 3: The final year focuses on bringing the actor’s skills together and preparing for professional practice. Through Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Professional Practice and Engagement with Technique, students work with peers from different disciplines, develop staged and screen performances, engage with industry professionals and build the confidence and professional skills needed to enter the performing arts industry.
Focus areas:
Acting, movement, voice, music, characterisation, screen acting, stage performance, performance-making, interdisciplinary collaboration, professional practice, dramaturgy, contemporary performance, musical theatre and industry preparation.

Students work in dedicated performance and rehearsal spaces, collaborate with students from other disciplines, and learn from Australian and international practitioners while developing the professional portfolio and performance experience needed to enter the industry.
Students gain practical experience through:
Student productions: Students participate in fully staged productions guided by professional directors, writers, choreographers, designers and technical specialists. NIDA runs annual production seasons spanning theatre, musical theatre, cabaret, studio performances and screen-based projects.
Screen-based projects: Acting students increasingly work on screen projects, giving them experience beyond live theatre and helping them develop skills relevant to film, television and digital entertainment.
Interdisciplinary collaboration: Students work alongside peers from acting, music theatre, design, costume, props and effects, technical theatre and stage management, mirroring the collaborative environment of the professional performing arts industry.
Dedicated rehearsal rooms: NIDA provides 10 rehearsal rooms ranging from 100–220m², with different flooring types, mirrors, pianos and audio-visual facilities suitable for classes, rehearsals, workshops and casting sessions.
Studios and performance spaces: Students have access to dedicated studios and NIDA's wider performance environment, including the Parade Theatre, Playhouse, The Space and Studio Theatre.
Industry showcases: Students have opportunities to showcase their skills to industry representatives, including agents and casting directors, helping them build professional connections as they approach graduation.

Graduates can pursue roles such as Stage Actor, Film & Television Actor, Musical Theatre Performer, or Digital/Screen Actor, with NIDA’s training designed to help students become flexible and adaptable performers.
Students are supported in making the transition from training to professional work through:
Industry connections and showcases: Graduating actors have opportunities to showcase their work to agents, casting directors, theatre producers, film and television executives and other industry guests through NIDA’s Acting Graduate Showcase.
Professional transition support: During their final year, Acting students are introduced and connected with industry professionals, including agents, to help them move from student training into professional practice.
International industry pathways: NIDA has a supporting partnership with Australians in Film (AiF) in Los Angeles, providing networking opportunities, professional development, introductions to its business and creative network and support for graduates interested in pursuing screen careers in the US.
Employment outcomes: NIDA reported that 95% of graduates were employed in the performance industry within six months of graduating, with more than half working in film and television. This figure was published by NIDA in connection with its recognition in The Hollywood Reporter’s top drama schools.
Broader graduate employment: NIDA’s 2019 annual report reported 92.7% overall employment among its 2018 BFA and MFA graduates based on its Course Experience Questionnaire, although this was across BFA and MFA graduates rather than the BFA Acting course alone.
Salary information: NIDA does not currently publish a specific graduate salary figure for the BFA (Acting), so salary expectations vary according to the performer’s role, production, contract and level of professional experience.
Long-term qualification value: The BFA (Acting) is an internationally recognised qualification and is self-accredited by NIDA under its TEQSA determination of Self-Accrediting Authority. NIDA is registered as a Higher Education Provider, with its registration renewed through 20 January 2033.
Strong alumni network: NIDA has maintained an active alumni community for more than 60 years, with graduates making significant contributions to Australian and international theatre, screen and creative industries.
Further Academic Progression: After completing the BFA (Acting), graduates can consider postgraduate study in the dramatic arts and related creative disciplines. NIDA currently offers postgraduate Master of Fine Arts programs including MFA Cultural Leadership, MFA Directing and MFA Dramatic Writing, while graduates may also pursue relevant postgraduate qualifications at other institutions depending on their academic background and career goals.
