BFA (Set construction technologies)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The National Institute of Dramatic Art

Program Overview

The BFA (Set Construction Technologies) at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) is a hands-on, practice-based degree for students who want to create the physical and technical environments behind theatre, film, events and live performance. Across three years, students develop skills in scenic construction, stage machinery, rigging, automation, fabrication and technical design while gaining experience through NIDA productions and industry collaborations.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students build their technical foundation through practical subjects such as Scenic Construction and Stage Machinery, Rigging in Live Performance and Professional Practice. They also work collaboratively with students from other disciplines, gaining experience in production environments while learning construction techniques, project planning, resource management and theatrical engineering.

Year 2: The focus moves towards more advanced staging and technology, with subjects including Expanded Staging Practices, Mechanical and Digital Automation and Staging Ideas: Experimental Art Movements and Practice. Students explore how mechanical and digital systems can be incorporated into performance environments while continuing to develop their construction, creative problem-solving and collaborative production skills.

Year 3: In the final year, students take greater ownership of their professional practice through an Independent Research Project, supported by continued interdisciplinary collaboration and professional practice. This stage allows students to bring together their technical, creative and management skills while developing an increasingly independent approach to scenic construction and production.

Focus areas (in a string): Scenic construction, stage machinery, timber and steel fabrication, rigging, mechanical engineering, digital automation, technical design, structural systems, electronic concepts, project management, sustainable staging, production collaboration.

Learning outcomes (in a string): Interpret performance-environment design briefs, solve complex technical design problems, develop innovative staging solutions, collaborate effectively, communicate ideas clearly, apply sustainable and ethical construction practices, and manage creative and technical projects.

Professional alignment (accreditation): NIDA is registered as a higher education provider by TEQSA, with self-accrediting authority for this BFA, and the qualification is recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The course is also CRICOS registered, allowing NIDA to enrol eligible international students on student visas.

Reputation (employability rankings): NIDA does not publish a specific QS or Guardian employability ranking for the BFA (Set Construction Technologies). Its strongest published employability evidence is industry-based: NIDA graduates have been employed by organisations including Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Opera Australia, Sydney Theatre Company, Stagekings Australia, TAIT Towers USA and The Australian Ballet.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The BFA (Set Construction Technologies) at NIDA is highly practical, with students spending their training in workshop and production environments rather than learning only through theory. Students develop hands-on skills in timber and steel fabrication, scenic construction, rigging, stage machinery, structural systems, and mechanical and digital automation, while working in small cohorts and contributing to NIDA productions. The course also provides opportunities to collaborate with external artists and undertake a placement with a leading production company in Australia or internationally:

  • Scenic construction workshops: Students develop practical skills in timber and metal construction techniques used in professional scenic workshops.

  • Stage machinery and rigging: Practical training covers stage machinery and live-performance rigging through hands-on exercises in theatre environments.

  • Computer-aided design (CAD): Professional Practice introduces students to CAD as used in scenic construction projects, alongside project and resource management.

  • Mechanical and digital automation: Students explore automated scenic elements and the use of technology within performance environments.

  • Interdisciplinary production projects: Students collaborate with peers from other NIDA disciplines and take on roles such as scenic assistants and production crew.

  • NIDA student productions: Students gain direct production experience through construction, staging and automation roles across NIDA performances and festivals.

  • Industry collaborations: Students can work with external artists on installations and performances, gaining experience with professional briefs and working practices.

  • Professional placement: Students have the opportunity to undertake a placement with a leading production company in Australia or internationally.

  • Properties, sets and workshops: Students have supervised access to NIDA’s properties, sets and workshops after completing the required workshop induction.

  • Library and research resources: NIDA’s library and research resources support the practical work, research and project development required throughout the degree.

  • Specialist creative spaces: NIDA’s Sydney campus includes workshops and studios designed to support behind-the-scenes disciplines such as Set Construction Technologies.
